Ryan Giggs has revealed why Paul Dummett has not been included in his latest Wales squad, confirming that the left-back wants to ‘concentrate on Newcastle’s relegation fight’.
It was revealed in May last year that Dummett decided to temporarily withdraw from international football in a bid to get back to full fitness at club level.
It has been stressed ever since that he has NOT retired from international football, however he has chosen to opt out of the Wales squad once again, preferring to focus on our fight for survival – something NUFC fans will be pleased to hear!
I was initially surprised when I saw the Wales squad, wondering quite how Giggs could have chose to overlook the in-form NUFC left-back, however it has all been made clear following his comments here:
“I had a conversation with Paul Dummett because he hasn’t been in the last few squads and he just felt that it wasn’t the right time to come back.
“He said that he wanted to concentrate on Newcastle’s relegation fight so I have to respect that at the moment, and we move on.
“In the future we will wait and see.”
Interestingly, it’s since been revealed that Ryan Giggs contacted both Paul Dummett and Karl Darlow to ‘clarify their international futures’, suggesting two NUFC players could have been chosen in his latest squad.

Fair play to Dummett – he’s clearly focused on keeping us up before anything else.
