NUFC fans have slated Gareth Southgate as the England boss has overlooked Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey once again, with the likes of Alfie Mawson, Jake Livermore and Lewis Cook earning three-lions call ups ahead of the Newcastle duo today.
The England squad has been announced today for upcoming friendlies with Holland and Italy, however there was no space for in-form Newcastle duo Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey – a move that’s gone down badly on Tyneside.
Here’s the squad, showing the likes of Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Swansea’s Alfie Mawson selected over Lascelles, whilst West Brom’s Jake Livermore and Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook got the nod over Jonjo Shelvey:

Tarkowski and Mawson have been having good seasons, so their call-ups are not totally unjustified, however I really struggle to see how Lascelles has been overlooked AGAIN. The backbone of this NUFC side, a consistent and monstrous performer all season and a leader – something England lack.
I also see Joe Gomez getting in – a player whose not played in the league for Liverpool since January..
Welbeck, Livermore, Gomez, and Hart aren't really doing much of note at club-level. Surprised Lascelles and Shelvey weren't given the nod over, but, the idea of picking on past achievement is a long standing criticism of the England team so it's not a huge surprise. https://t.co/NchNL1drkM

Then to Shelvey. He may not have been doing it all season, however he’s been much better since the turn of the year and has shone in recent wins over Man Utd and Southampton. I can understand (to an extent) that Cook has been more consistent than Shelvey, but how West Brom’s Jake Livermore gets in ahead of him I’ll never know!
Here’s what NUFC fans have had to say:
Bullshit England squad once again. Livermore over Shelvey and no Lascelles ?

Also, if Lascelles can’t get in when Cahill, Smalling and Jones are all dropped he probably never will. And Lewis Cook deserves it more than Shelvey, he’s been consistent. Livermore on the other hand…

There isn’t a chance Alfie Mawson is a better defender than Jamaal Lascelles.
There isn’t a chance Jake Livermore is a better midfielder than Jonjo Shelvey.

Even a Liverpool fan was baffled by some of Southgate’s decisions today:
Please explain how Livermore & Mawson get in over Shelvey & Lascelles

Their loss!
Scotland and republic of Ireland would welcome shelvey (who qualified for both) with open arms. England did the same thing to Wilfred Zaha only for him to switch both shelvey and lascelles would get into most international squads is love if both players jumped ship.
