“He’s so talented” – Lascelles names the player who impresses him ‘every day’ at NUFC

Jamaal Lascelles has praised the talent and technical ability of Jonjo Shelvey, suggesting Gareth Southgate was wrong to exclude the Newcastle midfielder from his recent England squad.

The skipper believes he is one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Premier League, admitting to how impressive he can be after training with him every day on Tyneside.

Here’s what he’s had to say during his wide-ranging interview in for the Telegraph today, stating he would’ve given England something they don’t have from midfield in their recent friendlies with Holland and Italy:

“I train with Jonjo every single day and technically he is so talented,”

“I’m not dissing anyone who is in the England team, they are there for a reason and they are very good players, but Jonjo can quite comfortably compete at that level.

“Technically he’s right up there with the best Premier League midfielders.

“We’ve (England) got hard-working midfielders, disciplined midfielders, but Jonjo offers something a little bit different. He definitely does for us. He’s one of our best players.”

I totally agree. It’s big praise from the captain, but one thing you cannot question when it comes to Shelvey is his technical ability.

He needs to improve is consistency, of that there’s no doubt, but he’s one of few players in this Newcastle team who has genuine Premier League quality. Hopefully we see more of that against Huddersfield on Saturday!
