Pundit names shock NUFC player he’d like to see in England’s World Cup squad

I was listening to TalkSPORT yesterday and, to my amazement, show host Adrian Durham called for NUFC stopper Freddie Woodman to be named in England’s World Cup squad.

Despite Woodman only playing a handful of games at England U-21 level (and being an unused substitute for them twice over the last week), TalkSPORT Drive host Adrian Durham reckoned the 21-year-old should be included in Southgate’s squad this summer.

Don’t get me wrong, Freddie looks like a big talent, but surely we’ll have to see him break through into our senior set up (and establish himself at England U-21 level) before anyone can even throw his name forward for the full national side?

He’s been impressing at Aberdeen following a loan move to the SPL side in January, keeping three clean sheets and saving a few penalties along the way, but this is a pretty barmy claim and one that doesn’t really add up.

Joe Hart’s inclusion in Southgate’s latest squad may have seemed farcical on recent form, but to suggest Woodman – a man with just one appearance for NUFC – would get in ahead of either Butland, Pickford or Pope seems a little far fetched.

He may be a future England number one, but he’s not going to be considered this summer.
