According to reports in Uruguay, Rafa Benitez will revive his interest in Abel Hernandez – the Hull City striker who looks all set to be available on a free this summer.
It may seem like a transfer story completely out the blue for most fans, but there could actually be some truth in this one.
Last September, the Chronicle admitted that Benitez showed interest in signing the Uruguayan over the summer, only for an injury to scupper his potential move to St James’ Park – with his agent also admitting he “had a chance to go to Newcastle” before his injury.
He’s only recently returned from the serious achilles injury that has seen him miss a large chunk of Hull’s Championship season, however he’s bagged an impressive 8 goals and 2 assists in just 10 Championship games.
The 27-year-old is hoping to secure a place in Uruguay’s World Cup squad, however he is all set to be available on a free this summer – and it’s sounding like Benitez may go back in for him.
Now, before anyone gets worked up, Hernandez’s potential signing on a free would almost certainly be a squad addition – not the man Rafa would be expecting to fire Newcastle up the table next season.
With 39 goals and 10 assists in 110 appearances for the Tigers and an impressive turn of pace, he could be a decent addition to add to our limited pool of strikers – providing we do sign a proven goalscorer as well this summer!
