A big story has emerged from the Chronicle, revealing that Rafa Benitez is all set to be given the green light by Mike Ashley to spend money on new signings this summer – with the NUFC owner also ready to offer the Spaniard a new improved contract at the club.
Now, anything to do with Mike Ashley will automatically leave us feeling cynical and questioning whether he’ll deliver, however this has to be seen as positive news in the circumstances.
A big takeover was the goal this summer, but with that looking increasingly unlikely, the main objective is just to see Benitez commit to the club – and this alleged move from Mike Ashley sounds like a big step in the right direction.
Here’s a snippet from Lee Ryder’s latest piece for the Chronicle:
“Talks between both parties are yet to commence but United sources are confident that they can arrive at a positive outcome this summer.
“Understandably, the Magpies will not go public on how much they have to spend in the next window as they don’t want to alert competitors on their available transfer funds.
“However, after guiding the club to Premier League safety in their first season back in the top flight Rafa Benitez will be trusted with funds to help the club grow again next season.
“United should bank around £80-£120million from TV revenue and prize money for finishing in mid-table with Benitez expected to get a fair portion of that sum – along with money generated from player sales.”
One thing to note is the story states that “Ashley will stick to his policy of not taking risks and the danger of overspending in the next few months”, however this sounds like something Benitez could cope with – he just needs consistency and a plan to show that we’re capable of competing.
With Rafa admitting last week that he wants to speak to the NUFC board ‘as soon as possible’ and the upcoming transfer window set to be shortened and complicated by the upcoming World Cup, this seems like a positive step in the right direction – providing this proposal does actually suffice for the Spaniard.
