According to the Mirror, Newcastle are one of several Premier League sides interested in signing West Brom’s Jonny Evans this summer – the centre-back who has a release clause of just £3m if the Baggies are relegated.
A central defender won’t be high on Rafa’s wish-list this summer, but with Chancel Mbemba likely to be sold, a cut-price deal to sign Evans could represent a brilliant piece of business.
The story claims West Ham, Palace, Leicester and Everton are also interested – which is no surprise given the 30-year-old was being linked with a £25m move to Arsenal and Manchester City over the last two transfer windows.
The £3m escape clause is dependant on their relegation to the second tier, but with Darren Moore’s side 8 points adrift at the bottom of the table, their fate could actually be sealed at St James’ Park tomorrow.
A bargain worth pursuing for Benitez or a player you’d rather steer clear of this summer given West Brom’s dreadful season?
