Scout in Attendance have confirmed that Newcastle had club officials present to watch Sporting Lisbon’s 2-1 in over Portimonense on Saturday – and it has since emerged from O’Jogo that it was our old friend Bas Dost who we were watching.
You know the summer transfer window is fast approaching when the big Dutchman is getting linked (once again) with a move to NUFC!
There’s a lot to be decided at the club before we consider transfer targets, but there could actually be something in this (hear me out!).
He’s a player we’ve clearly been tracking for years now, and the Chronicle also revealed just a few weeks ago that Dost was actually a player Benitez tried to sign last summer – only to be priced out of a move.
Despite scoring an impressive 26 league goals this season (33 in all comps), Dost didn’t find the next during Sporting’s 2-1 win over the weekend – although he did play his part in their first goal, providing the assist for Bruno Fernandes:

He turns 29 this summer, so that and a potentially hefty price tag (after 69 goals in 89 for Sporting) may make it a very difficult deal to do, however it’s not entirely implausible.
An alleged fallout with the club’s owner is said to have left him ‘desperate’ to find a new club this summer, with it also being reported that he’s ready for a ‘new challenge’. And the Premier League would represent exactly that – especially after conquering Holland, Germany and Portugal during his career.
Don’t hold your breath, but it sounds like our interest in the 6ft 5′ Dutchman may not be dead just yet!
