Chelsea name the price NUFC must pay to sign Kenedy permanently this summer – Report

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are open to selling Kenedy in a bid to generate funds this summer – however they are set to demand ‘over £20m’ for the left winger.

It had been claimed by the Mirror back in March that the 22-year-old would be available for £15m this summer, but we’ll have though to break our transfer record to make his loan move permanent if the Mail are to be believed.

Here’s what the Mail’s Matt Barlow has had to say during a piece on Chelsea’s plans this summer, claiming the club WILL sell the likes of Kenedy to raise funds for new signings – but he won’t come cheap:

“Michy Batshuayi is valued at £50m after a successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund while Kenedy has impressed at Newcastle and is viewed as a saleable asset worth more than £20m.”

On the plus side, he seems keen to stay (having admitted several times just how happy he is here), but how much over £20m are we talking here? will Mike Ashley be willing to spend that sort of money?

Two big questions that need answering – with the latter being something Benitez will no doubt bring up during his talks with NUFC officials scheduled this week.

Having managed there just a few years ago, Benitez will have a good rapport with Chelsea, so that could help any potential deal, but it’ll ultimately come down to whether Mike Ashley is prepared to pay up.

I suspect the Kenedy saga will be a big test of Ashley’s ambitions this summer. Pay up and break our transfer record and it’ll be a huge breakthrough for Benitez and the club, but dig his heels and revert to his old ways and the writing may just be on the wall as far as Rafa’s concerned.

What do you reckon folks – is he worth ‘over £20m’?

Totally agree – a 22-year-old Brazilian who’s looking the part in the Premier League on his first proper season is definitely worth a punt at that price. £20m doesn’t buy you what it used to!

  3. Kennedy may well be worth a big price spike, and while he still has room to go in his development to command this sort of ridiculous money, the ridiculous state of the transfer market may well support such demands. He isn’t worth 20M, but Chelsea may well get that for him. NUFC won’t pay that much for any individual, at least not with the current owner.
I have enjoyed Kennedy – I expected a patchy performance from a petulant prima-donna and have been pleasantly surprised – but I doubt he will be staying.
Rafa will want to fill the hole he leaves. He likes his wide-men, does our Rafa, and I don’t think he sees Atsu or Murphy or even Ritchie and Perez being more than squad-fodder for competition purposes. And, of course, Rafa knows he has to improve the striker department. Rafa will try to get in better quality finishers, with more experience, for all four wide/front/attacking positions. I doubt he will have more than about 60M overall (only 1/3 of the TV deal, so 40M plus what he gets from selling Mitro, Darlow, and the other dozen or more players that don’t fit into his long-term plans) and he won’t be allowed to spend more than 10-12M on any one player. I expect him to bring in a number of squad-level players to work with / churn through, and try to get one or two to develop into head-liners. Given Rafa’s form, this is highly probable, and a top ten finish next season will be a real certainty 🙂 but it won’t win trophies or even guarantee European competition qualification 😕 Hopefully it is enough to satisfy and so keep Rafa 😉

  4. I think FCB might just actually go for this one thinking of his resale value in 2-3 years. 20m for a 22 Brazilian who could command 60+m down the line might just get his gambling instinct going.

  5. Well that’s the first player that will not be joining Newcastle the fat controller will not pay out that much why I here you ask ? Because Rafa is not getting that much to spend

  6. This is the test for Ashley that I believe will see Rafa saying BUY HIM OR STICK YOUR CONTRACT, Despite loving the Toon and the fans this will be part of his assurance testing plan, over to you Ashley!!!!

  7. I think we may go up to 25 for him. If it gets rafa contract signed then I am sure Ashley will pay up. Think what he spent under mclaren to stay in the top league. This is a definite statement to be made.
I just hope bigger teams stay clear as he has a whole lot of potential.
