NUFC loanee Ivan Toney was back in the goals for Scunthorpe last night, with his crucial second half sealing their place in this year’s League One play-offs.
It was his 14th goal of the season and a very important one too in the battle between 6th vs 7th, with Scunthorpe’s 2-0 win over promotion chasing Plymouth taking them up to 5th in League One (and clear of seventh) with just one game to play.
His clever backheeled finish in-front of the Sky cameras was his 8th goal in 13 games since he joined the Irons on loan in January (and his 14th of the season having scored 6 at Wigan prior), however his future at Newcastle appears to be in serious doubt.
The Chronicle revealed just a few weeks ago that Rafa Benitez is ‘open to offers’ for the 22-year-old this summer despite catching the eye in England’s third tier this season.

He’ll have a big part to play in Scunthorpe’s push to be promoted to the Championship this summer, however it looks like his future will lie away from St James’ Park if any half-decent offers arrive over the coming months.
He looks a good athlete and an explosive talent, but with new strikers set to arrive this summer and Adam Armstrong perhaps ahead of him in Rafa Benitez’s plans, you can see why it may be better for all parties if we let him go.
