“I’m very concerned” – Alan Shearer exposes Mike Ashley’s latest statement on Benitez & NUFC

Alan Shearer believes Mike Ashley’s latest statement is a simple ‘copy and paste’ from last summer’s announcement, stating he needs to give Benitez the backing he deserves after admitting to being ‘very concerned’ about the Spaniard’s position at the club.

It was honest and straight talking stuff from Shearer, who pulled no punches in response to the NUFC owners statement which was read out by Gary Lineker on Match of the Day last night.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Copy and paste – different date. From last year – it’s exactly the same thing.

“Give him some money to spend. Rafa’s always wanted the money to spend.

“He’s made a profit in transfers. Give him the money to spend.

“I’m very concerned about it. He’s not being given the backing he deserves.

“He’s got Newcastle into 10th position. If he can do that with that squad, can you imagine what he could do with some backing and some finance.”

Absolutely spot on from Shearer. It’s exactly what he said last summer, so why on earth should we or Benitez believe him?

Just look at what he said last May. He promised Rafa ‘every penny’ and he clearly didn’t receive that.

May 2017 statement: “I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”

May 2018 statement: “I will continue to ensure that every penny generated by the club is available to him.”

As Shearer says, if Benitez can get this group of players into the top 10 then just imagine what we could achieve with some proper backing.

It feels like a takeover is essential if we’re ever to reach our true potential under Rafa, but for now, let’s hope Ashley actually delivers on his promise. It’d be a first.
