Mike Ashley’s hidden agenda behind his latest statement at NUFC – a worrying theory

Almost like clockwork, Mike Ashley released another end of season statement which in reality, was pretty hollow. Nowhere near as committal as his previous ‘five year plans’ or stating he wasn’t leaving ‘until he had won a trophy’; perhaps the lack of intent in his latest PR exercise shows the level of apathy he has for running the club.

A sale wasn’t mentioned but there were a few parts of the statement that are worrying – including my unsettling theory behind the following comment…

“On many occasions throughout the season they have been described as a Championship side, which I personally consider to be derogatory.”

This was concerning part of the statement and addressing the accusation of the quality of the players felt unnecessary, unless Ashley intends to use it as an excuse to once again not invest. Rafa working miracles will, knowing Ashely, allow him to use a 10th place finish to paint the narrative that we have a strong squad and only a few new faces.

Anyone within football knows our squad is strong in character but not quality and being guided by a world class manager has allowed us to overachieve. We need serious investment to build on a rare, positive season under Ashley.

The ‘pantomime villain’ promises “every penny generated” for Benitez

Sunday’s statement included the following: “Rafa, as always, has my full support, and, contrary to some media reports that portray me as a pantomime villain, I will continue to ensure that every penny generated by the club is available to him.”

Just 12 months ago this was the statement published on the club’s website and attributed to Ashley following face-to-face discussions with Benitez: “I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”

It is nothing new and Ashley didn’t invest last year, expect some loan deals in January. The usual excuses of the amount of fees spent on agents and not having felt the affect of the TV money were wheeled out but there will be no hiding place this summer. Rafa and the fans know it and it is about time every penny, means EVERY PENNY. He should focus on this rather than what the media think of him.

“I hope very much that Rafa will remain at Newcastle United”

The second crucial line in the statement is Ashley’s declaration that he “hopes very much” Benitez will remain at St James’ Park.

Again, actions speak louder than words though, and Benitez will need reassurances from the owner before he commits himself to the Magpies. Talk has proved cheap and lies have been a constant thread of the Ashley era. It is about time he backs up these statements; even if he intends to sell the club, keeping Rafa will make it easier to sell. He needs to make sure Benitez stays, not hope that he does after failing to deliver on his demands.

Rafa needs assurances – we should be asking him what he wants not the other way round. A long summer of speculation awaits, so for now, let’s still enjoy the superb win over Chelsea.

  1. Cheers Prem from the last thread. I can’t really comment much on most of the BBC commentators because most do not appear here on NBC or BEin, The exception is Phil Neville who is an idiot. Last game he spent half the time commenting on Man U, who weren’t even playing. He also said that Man City need a new striker because they SHOULD sell Aguero and then the next 20 minutes digging himself a deeper hole by trying to explain it. He never mentioned number of games and injuries as a reason which would have been valid to get a back-up. Idiot.

I read Keown’s Daily Mail column occasionally and can only assume he writes it to get clicks. It is the biggest pile of drivel you will ever read and until Rooney “retired” he was still saying he was England’s best player and should be Captain in Russia. I wonder how that is going. Hope he enjoys DC as he is not even good enough for Fat Sam.

  2. In a strange way I will regret the departures of Dour Dave and Big Fat Sam because it means they will take their seats on the pundits couch to spread their particular brands of darkness and smugness. Thank God they do not allow gum in TV studios as I was turning into my mother every time BFS was on the touchline, yelling at the TV – do not chew with your mouth open you uncouth, smug tw@t.

  3. Simon: there is no way that Ashley wrote that. The “pantomime villain” line gives it away, no chance Ashley would have said that. We all know that Keith Bishop wrote it so it is difficult to read too much into the words, even though I am sure Ashley signed off on it.

The accounts haven’t been released yet but I am pretty sure we will have made a loss in The Championship season. Rafa may therefore have been given every penny generated by the club as the PL money comes in tranches and there were debts to be cleared. I have no inside knowledge and am loathe to give Fatty any credit but he might not have not been telling Porkies.

I will be interested to see if we are still paying for players in cash because that places a major restriction on Rafa when the rest of the league pays in instalments.

  4. Prem: I just read your BBC stats article from the last thread. It is interesting to see how few assists the England midfield hopefuls have. Shelvey is joint top on 3. Blows away Martin Samuel’s theory in the article I posted yesterday.

Dele Alli is top on 10 but he is not really played as a midfielder.

I still don’t get it. Shelvey is the perfect understudy to Henderson who has had his share of injuries. Henderson gets stick for all the side and back passes but he is not a bad player.

      (Quote)

  5. All this guff about Shelvey’s red cards is a joke. Do you know who has the most yellow and red cards in La Liga history. It is the same person – the Spain and Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos. I don’t see the Spanish press saying he shouldn’t be at the WC because of his disciplinary record.

      (Quote)

  6. And why is it being painted as a straight choice between Loftus Cheek and Shelvey for who goes to Russia? Their games are totally different. Shelvey should be Henderson’s backup and it should be a choice between Lallana, Wilshere and Loftus Cheek.

Wilshere shouldn’t even be considered on form and the fact that he is now played out of position at Arsenal given his total lack of pace.

      (Quote)

  7. I am trying to make a case for Shelvey even though I know he wont go. He has been our joint player of the season along with Lascelles. When Shelvey plays well like Sunday, NUFC play well.

  8. I know Diame was head to head against Kante on Sunday but it is also Kante’s job to shut down the creativity of the opposition midfield. The PL player of the season 2 years ago and the force behind Leicester’s and Chelsea’s titles totally failed to stop Wor Jonjo.

  9. Mick Quinn agrees with me. He usually makes sense in The Chronic even if he is a few days behind the news.

    https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jonjo-shelvey-lascelles-would-go-14659964

I know I have derided Quinn in the past but that was more because The Chronic referred to him as “Toon Legend”. Now they have gone the other way and simply refer to him as “Columnist”. I wouldn’t object to “ex-Toon Star” Mick Quinn. Fat Man Scouse is better though.

Kante and Courtois were the only 2 trying which is why it is all the more impressive that Jonjo ran the show. Still wont go to Russia. If Wilshere goes then I am not sure if I will be able to stand it. We get most of the Arsenal games in the US and he has been the worst player on the pitch in many. Not just the Arsenal players but the opposition. His injuries have robbed him of any pace he had but they still play him as box to box or number 10. He hits a couple of good passes a game, points a lot, runs into opposition players and falls over and claims a foul. He is also a little dirty b. and mistimes at least a couple of tackles a game, feigning injury. You might get the impression I am not impressed with Wilshere. Roy Keane is right, he is the most overrated player in the PL. It might be worth him going to Russia though just to see the steam coming out of Royston’s ears 🙂

Addition by subtraction with Wilshere. You may have picked up on the fact that I don’t rate him 🙂

Welbeck has a good record for England but he always seems to fluff his lines in front of goal for Arsenal. I wouldn’t trust him. Play him on the wing at a push. If he plays ahead of Vardy then Southgate is a moron.

Never expected Jonjo to go. Even though Southgate was manager to Boro I think he has forgotten the A1(M) exists and only knows M6 and M25 now.

      (Quote)

  15. Well, now all that is decided it is obvious what Southgate needs to do. He has to play only Spurs, Liverpool and Man City players apart from the goalie. They all play a similar style of high press so take advantage of how much better their club managers are than Southgate.

Vardy and Lingard as subs if it isn’t working.

I think we will get out of the group and have the easiest 1st knockout draw. So, quarter finals lads and out on penalties again.

Could we get Shearer or Baines to coach them on penalties? No, not you Gareth. We know what happened with you. And Chris Waddle, not you either. Maybe a German, Lothar Matheus will be a pundit at the WC?

      (Quote)

  16. Lampard will be there for some TV station so he could spend a day coaching penalties. Have Shearer and Lampard do a couple of penalty coaching sessions.

Nah, that is too logical for England.

Hi Eric, no mate, ran out of time as we came to Rome as well. Had more time in Rome than Sorrento, but loved Sorrento. As it was my stepdaughter’s wedding, Sorrento was more about family, but we will go back and do the Positano and Amalfi coast as well as a Capri. Still in Rome but head home tomorrow.

He seems more discerning than most (I am looking at you Lee) but I doubt he is completely immune to the hype machine. Just because he is given the moniker “respected journalist” doesn’t mean we should believe everything he says. I wouldn’t put it past Rafa’s “people” to do some politicking on his behalf. He has been around and around the block for a long time so he knows how the game is played.

  31. And I have said this before, what are Rafa’s options if he wants to stay in England? Looks like Arteta for Arsenal and Silva for Everton. That leaves West Ham and Leicester. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Leicester sack the man who won them the title and West Ham have the 3 stooges and are close to selecting someone else anyway. However, I do suspect WHam are looking at Rafa’s situation.

And are their squads that much better than ours. I know they have spent more, but they do not seem to have spent wisely.

  32. If you think Ashley is toxic then look at West Ham. Would you rather have a purveyor of tat or Porn Merchants with a self aggrandizing sidekick? Probably about equal 🙂 But then their fans are angry at everything. A couple of bad results and they’ll be on the pitch.

It is like Real Madrid in a way. I went to a match there and they went 3-1 down and they were booing Christiano Ronaldo. Christiano Ronaldo FFS!!! Then he scored 2 in injury time and they shut up.

    Goals 8
    Assists 7
    Shots 69
Chances created – 46 more than any other Stoke player.

I think he is still only 26 as well so even Fat Mike would like that.

Aye, but they also signed Slimani from Portugal for 29 million. I think Musa cost about 20. Considering they will probably get 60 million for Mahrez they are recycling the money.

Sullivan interviews his possible successor then calls Moyes to sound him out about the job and finishes by getting rid. Then Moyes says he wouldn’t have taken it anyway as they are a mess (mutual I didn’t fancy her anyway).

They say they will make an appointment in 10 days. Would Rafa want to walk into that mess? They will spend a bit but they also interfere. I have also seen reporters say they have a better squad than NUFC. Not that I have seen. They are the ultimate Jeckyll and Hyde team. They can only be arsed when they hit the relegation zone or there is a riot. They are honestly the worst team I have seen this year in a few matches, us, Man U away, City, the one where the fans blockaded the posh seats.

As long as Rafa doesn’t seriously consider them it could help us by forcing the Fatman’s hand.

Also I don’t rate Henderson or Delph ahead of Shelvey, but can understand Henderson’s experience & Delph versatility play LB or midfield – but I don’t see how Loftus Cheek gets in ahead of Shelvey. I definitely don’t see how Lewis Cook or Jake Livermore makes the standby list ahead of him – even Lallana for that matter, he’s been out injured most the season.

I like Lallana but saying he has been out inured most of the season is, if anything, an understatement. He has played a total of 236 minutes. Southgate initially said his prerequisites for picking a player were that they were fit and in the team.

  46. I don’t think it is a terrible squad because Southgate didn’t have a lot to work with. There is a decent 1st 11 in there but not much apart from Vardy if he wants to change things up. That’s why I feel Shelvey is a big mistake. If it ain’t working bring on Vardy and Shelvey for the last 20 minutes.

We have seen enough of England at tournaments to know that they usually freeze and play terrible football, eeking out draws in mostly **** groups. You have to be a bit dumb not to give yourself a plan B.

  47. Sharpy: I am not going to be ultra-critical of the squad but you identify some problems:

    Jones: walking sicknote

    Stones: walking unforced error

Walker: hasn’t played in a back 3 except 1 game for England. Our best wing-back

Henderson: does not play the same way for England as he does for Liverpool. Goes completely into his shell and only passes sideways and backwards.

Alli: red card if the foreign Refs don’t cut him the slack English Refs do.

Cahill: probably there for his experience and will probably come in if Stone drops a clanger.

I agree with Stu though, total double standards. I think he was right not to take Hart and Whilshire for the reasons he gave – but to then put the likes of Jones and Cahill ahead of Tarkoski and Lascelles is bullshit. Other than City, Burnley and Newcastle were arguably teams of the season – and there is 1 player representing both team ONE – and he will likely be 3rd choice keeper.

I really can’t believe Welbeck has made that squad. He’s done nothing at Arsenal this season – I think he’s hopeless personally.
I’d have much rather seen someone like Abrahams or Solanke get the chance, coz I see them as future England CFs and it would be an opportunity to blood them in a big tournament. One wonder goal and 4 penalties in Rooney’s 10. You’re doing the tallest dwarf comparison when you compare him and Welbeck. I have no problem with anybody disagreeing with me on Rooney. I do the Brian Cough line when asked what happens if the Chairman disagrees with a signing, to paraphrase: we sit down for 20 minutes discuss it thoroughly and then decide I am right.

Rooney still has it in him to strike the ball great sometimes but Mourinho even said when describing Wayne that he, Mourinho, could hit a 40 yard pinpoint pass when there was nobody on him.

Enough Rooney though, he “retired” remember 🙂 Next he will be “retiring” from the PL.

  58. Sharpy: I sort of disagree with you on picking from the top teams. I think they should make up almost all of the squad with a sprinkling of others. Mainly because we have 3 world class managers in Pep, Klopp and Poch who all play a similar style. Their players will not have to be drilled by Southgate who is at best a bottom half/relegation PL manager and probably Championship. I think he got Boro relegated, right. Also, look at what happened with Coleman after Wales.

Of course, Southgate will probably pick the core from Spurs, City and Liverpool but I bet he asks them to play a different way from their clubs.

  59. Rooney is in for a shock if he thinks MLS will be a doddle. They are nowhere near technically as good as the PL but they are super fit and it is a fast league. 61. Sharpy: was it you who put up the link of the pundits the BBC are taking on this Russia junket? There were like 20 of them. I can just see the irate letters to the Mail about Licence Payer’s money. And they would be right in this case. If that’s just the BBC then what about Sky and ITV and BEin Sports. The posh restaurants and strip clubs in Russia will be overrun with pundits in flashy suits with Hublot watches.

  63. 3 of my starting 11 not even in the squad. but hey, people who have hardly played and even when they did did little, are going to be fresher and fitter. Otherwise I have no idea how Cahill, Delph, Jones, Rose, Stones, and Wellbeck have qualified. I could make a case for Jones to be on standby, but the rest? really?

No. I just know they are really expensive and a lot footballers wear them. I could have said Rolex but the average Hublot is a lot more. Its sort of a metaphor for how spoilt and rich the players/pundits are. I think the country officials got them as gifts from the Brasil WC organisers. Should I have said Sekonda since it is Russia?

  66. Being reading about West Ham’s recruitment. They basically wanted Moyes in reserve whilst they looked for someone better. To his credit Dour Dave decided he wasn’t playing that game. I doubt Rafa would consider them. I think they pissed people about at Birmingham as well.
