Newcastle may have been tracking Galatasaray winger Garry Rodrigues over the past year, but that’s as far our interest may stretch, with their vice-president Ali Araboglu stating the Turkish giants value him at €30m (£26m) following his recent rise to form.
After watching him several times prior, Turkish reports claimed that Newcastle had sent scouts to watch him during Galatasaray’s final two games of the season – and he’ll have impressed in the first one, setting up both goals during their 2-0 win over Yeni Malatyaspor.
Given the amount of times the club have gone to watch him over the past 6 months, he’s naturally been described as one of Benitez’s top targets going into the upcoming transfer window, however our interest may soon diminish if they do end up demanding £26.
Here’s what vice-president Ali Araboglu has had to say about his potential sale this summer:
“Yes, we are aware of several clubs keeping tabs on him. We know five clubs sent scouts to monitor him last weekend.
Following his recent form, we value him at €30m.”
With 10 goals and 11 assists this season, he’s having the best season of his career (which looks set to win Galatasaray the Super Lig title), however this doesn’t mean he’s worth £26m.
He turns 28 later this year, he’s not proven himself in any of Europe’s top leagues and I’m quite sure Benitez would spend upwards of £20m on someone like Kenedy (not him), if we had that sort of money to spend.
Unless they lower their demands significantly, I really can’t see this happening. We had a bid of £8m rejected in January by all accounts, so it would be unlike Ashley to treble that offer less than 6 months later!
