Rafa Benitez makes intriguing admission when asked about signing Fernando Torres this summer

Speaking to Spanish outlet MARCA, Rafa Benitez has hinted that he would like to bring Fernando Torres to Newcastle United this summer – admitting it is an ‘attractive’ option, but one that wouldn’t be easy to complete.

Torres, now 34, has spent the last four seasons back in La Liga with boyhood club Atletico Madrid, however he confirmed recently  that this season would be his last in Spain.

He’s been linked with moves to the China Super League and the MLS, however there’s been inevitable rumours that Benitez would like to be reunited with the striker – and Rafa’s comments here all but confirm that.

Here’s what he’s had to say when speaking to MARCA today:

“I think it will be harder for him to come for him, not because we don’t want to. I don’t know what’s going on in his head, but maybe he is thinking about something else.

“It would be attractive, but I don’t think it would be easy,”

So, it’s clearly a deal Rafa would love to do, however it wouldn’t come cheap – even if he’s to be a free agent this summer.

His wage demands would be massive, and, as Benitez admits, it wouldn’t be an easy one to pull off. He also seems unsure if Torres would fancy a move back to the Premier League.

Some intriguing comments from Rafa nonetheless, however. Let’s see if anything comes of it this summer..
