After seeing how Newcastle fans reacted to beating Chelsea and finishing 10th a few weeks ago, Jamaal Lascelles admits he ‘couldn’t imagine how crazy it would be if we challenged or a trophy of won something” – and he’s not wrong!
It was an up and down season and one where our ultimate goal was simply to simply stay up, however there were unforgettable highs, with survival and some big home wins over the league’s top 6 seeing some electric atmosphere’s at St James’ Park.
The buzz was back during the 3-0 win over Chelsea on the final day, but Lascelles has pondered just how incredible and ‘crazy’ the atmosphere would be if we were able to properly challenge and finally end our trophy drought.
Here’s what he’s said to the Chronicle today when talking about the Toon Army:
“We finished the season on a high and it was a really great way to end.
“We have such a huge stadium that’s full every week and to see the fans reacting like that for finishing 10th makes you wonder what will happen if we can achieve even more for them.
“I couldn’t imagine how crazy it would be if we challenged for a trophy or won something if that’s a small taste of making the top half.
“It would be unreal.
“These fans are incredible though.
“Even the games we lost or the ones we played rubbish they still had it in them to clap us off after cheering for the full game.
“It means so much to them you see and we don’t want to let them down.
“That’s why we went around the pitch.
“The gave us their all and we want to do the same for them.”
This is brilliant from the skipper – a man who really does ‘get it’ at NUFC, understanding his role as captain and delivering both on and off the pitch.
After years of hurt, underachievement and turmoil, Rafa gives us hope and this is another reminder of how important it is that Ashley disappears – or at least backs him while he’s here.
If a few Sunday’s ago was our reaction to survival, top 10 and a win over Chelsea, how incredible would it be to be part of something that’s REALLY worth celebrating about.
