A week ago, West Ham were believed to have named Rafa Benitez as their number one target to replace David Moyes, but today it’s ex-Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini who’s been appointed at the London Stadium.
Just a few days ago, social media was full of Hammers fans absolutely full of it, thinking they had Benitez all but secured after David Sullivan’s statement confirmed they were ‘very close’ to appointing an unnamed manager who was proven both in Europe and in the Premier League.
It certainly did sound like it could’ve been Rafa, as he did fit that bill, but they were wrong.
In Manuel Pellegrini they have a top class manager and one who has a league title on his CV with Manchester City, however it’s quite amusing to see how fans have reacted to Pellegrini’s appointment just a few days on from hoping it would be Benitez – the club’s initial number one target.
Some of these reactions are pretty embarrassing really, with some conveniently deciding they never wanted Rafa in the first place now they’ve failed to land him for the second time:

“Pellegrini is a great managerial hire. Maybe even better than Benitez.”
