Reliable source claims Benitez could seal surprise £13m signing if Buffon completes PSG move

According to reputable French paper ‘L’Equipe’, Gianluigi Buffon’s expected move to PSG could see fellow goalkeeper Alphonse Areola seal a £13m move to Newcastle this summer – with Benitez said to be a ‘long term admirer’ of the 25-year-old stopper.

This one’s a funny one. On one side, it seems clear that Rafa is a big fan of Areola (with the Chronicle confirming in their live blog today that Rafa looked at signing him over the last two windows), however, on the flip side, do we really need another goalkeeper?

With Dubravka all set to sign (and looking every bit good enough to be our new number one next season), would it be wise, or even likely, for Benitez to spend £13m on ANOTHER goalkeeper – especially when that could be a pretty hefty chunk of his budget.

Back to the story in L’Equipe, and they’re claiming that Areola is unhappy and wants out after hearing about PSG’s decision to replace him with Gianluigi Buffon – the Italian legend who’s all set to leave Juventus this summer.

They report that Benitez has held ‘several talks’ with the 25-year-old – who’s been PSG’s number one all season – and remains interested in bringing him to St James’ Park.

Who know what will come of this with Dubravka set to sign and deals for Kenedy and a few strikers appearing to be a bigger priority, however this one really is one to watch.
