According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are ‘very interested’ in signing former NUFC stopper Tim Krul as they search to sign a back up goalkeeper – a move that could prove to be one of the most unexpected this summer if true.
The Dutchman spent 11 years on Tyneside and, on his day, was one of the best keepers we’ve had in recent years, however injuries and a resultant slip down the pecking order meant he left last summer to join Brighton.
He’s since struggled for game time under Chris Hughton, playing second fiddle to Mathew Ryan, and it’s now being claimed in Spain that Barcelona want the Dutch international to become their number two instead.
Mundo Deportivo claim that Barca are looking to bring in a new stopper with back up option Jasper Cillessen set to leave this summer in search of first-team football – and they believe Krul is an option being seriously considered.
It sounds a silly one, and it would be one of the oddest transfers of the summer, but with Barcelona needing a new keeper and Krul set to become available on a free at the end of the month, it could just happen!
Tim Krul to Barcelona is a move that would make a lot of sense. Excellent on his day and probably now happy to take a back-up role, yet he’d play enough to get back in the Netherlands squad.
And back when both were regulars, TK was a better goalkeeper than Cillessen, too.
