Report reveals the star striker Rafa Benitez is trying to sign for NUFC – and he could join on a free!

According to MARCA, Newcastle United are ‘very interested’ in signing long-term target Bas Dost this summer – and the prolific striker could be available on a free as he considers terminating his contract after being attacked by Sporting Lisbon ultras.

It wouldn’t be a transfer window at NUFC if weren’t linked with a move for Bas Dost – a player the club have clearly had their eye on for several years – and this story is quite an incredible one.

Despite scoring an incredible 34 goals in 49 games last season, he (along with several other teammates) were attacked by their own fans just last month – an incident that left the 6ft 5′ Dutchman needing six stitched in his head (see images at the bottom of this article ).

Back to today’s story from Spain, and it’s claimed that Sevilla and Everton are both in for Dost – however MARCA claim that Newcastle are ‘especially interested’ in signing the striker tipped to sign at St James’ Park for several years:

“Sevilla, as MARCA informed, has set its sights on the Dutch Bas Dost.

“The Sporting de Portugal striker will change his club this summer and could even end his contract, as some of his teammates have done, after the incidents with the ultras at the end of last year.

“The Nervionian club is attentive to the possible solution to their conflict and has already sent their agents their intention to sit down and negotiate.

“The problem is that the main competitors will come from the Premier. Everton and especially Newcastle are very interested.”

People will probably say ‘silly season is back’ after reading this one, but it’s worth mentioning that, just recently, the Chronicle actually confirmed that Benitez attempted to sign him last summer – so there appears to be genuine interest here.

One concern is his age, 29, and the fact his wage demands could be huge. With him potentially leaving on a free (should he decide to terminate his contract), you can guarantee he’d want big money.

Who knows what will happen with this one (I for one think he’ll have several more attractive offers than NUFC), but either way, this is some story.

  1. If the reports are to be believed and Ashley is withholding transfer funds until Rafa signs a new deal we can discount EVERY suggested deal. The money is just not available

  2. A player can’t just terminate his contract and walk away on a free transfer. He would need to buy himself out of the contract.
