NUFC announce retained list – Two senior players axed, mass U-23 exodus & new deals offered

Newcastle United have announced their retained list following the 2017/18 season, confirming exits for Jesus Gamez, Massaido Haidara and several known U-23 players – with new deals being offered to Luke Charman and Callum Roberts.

The piece from NUFC.co.uk also confirms that the club are ‘currently in negotiations’ with Alex Gilliead after his successful loan spell with Bradford last season – however the likes of Curtis Good, Tom Heardman, Stuart Findlay, Kyle Cameron and Paul Woolston have all been let go.

Here’s a break down of the players released and those being offered new deals or professional contracts:

Senior players released: Jesus Gamez and Massaido Haidara

U-23’s offered new deals: Luke Charman, Calum Roberts and Alex Gilliead (in negotiations)

Scholars offered professional contracts: Thomas Allan, Lewis Cass, Matthew Longstaff, Oliver Walters, Kelland Watts and Adam Wilson.

Scholars released from Academy: Isaac Gamblin, Mace Goodridge, Jack Robson and Kurtis Russell.

Following the release of several senior and youth players, here’s what Rafa Benitez had to say:

“I would like to say thank you to the players who are leaving us this summer for their hard work and commitment while with the club.

“Letting players go is always a difficult decision and I wish each of them only the best for their football careers.”

Good luck to all – whether they be departing, signing new deals or professional contracts with the club.

  1. isnt this an indictment of the coaching staff that so many have been let go?

or is this a typical number of players moving on>?

Good point mate – you’ve got to question those coaching all the U-23’s (or those who bring them in in the first place) when so so many are deemed not good enough.

The whole Beardsley thing hasn’t helped either..
