North-East report confirms NUFC’s interest in the winger once described as a ‘mini Messi’

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are hoping to beat Ajax and RB Leipzig to the signing of Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards – the winger Mauricio Pochettino once claimed to be a ‘mini Messi’.

This comes from their latest story assessing the young English talent Benitez is keeping tabs on this summer, stating that the 19-year-old is someone we’re looking at – with him set to leave Tottenham this summer after a lack of first-team opportunities.

Edwards has represented England from ever youth level from U-16 to U-20 and is clearly looking to make the step up from U-23 football with Spurs, having bagged an impressive 8 goals and 5 assists from 15 appearances in the Premier League 2 last season.

Here’s a snippet from Chris Waugh’s piece for the Chronicle, confirming our interest in the highly-rate winger:

“Another talented English youngster Newcastle are thought to be keeping tabs on is Marcus Edwards, who was once described by Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino as a ‘mini Messi’.

“The 19-year-old is expected to leave north London this summer in search of first-team opportunities, with Newcastle joining Ajax and German outfit RB Leipzig on his list of suitors.”

It’s not the proven Premier League winger we’re crying out for this summer, but any deal for Edwards could be a smart one – with him clearly frustrated by his lack of game time at Spurs.

Here’s him in action:

  1. This is a very talented lad, who should do well under Rafa Benitez. I hope Newcastle can wrap up the deal sooner than later
