‘Reliable source’ confirms NUFC’s bid to sign Brazilian international

According to Lille-based paper ‘La Voix du Nord’, Newcastle have indeed had an initial offer rejected to sign Brazilian midfielder Thiago Maia – confirming claims last week that we’d made an offer for the Lille midfielder.

French outlet LeSport10 suggested that we’d had an offer knocked back just a few days ago, but it’s been confirmed today by a source close to Lille (La Voix du Nord) that an offer was in fact made for the 21-year-old.

Here’s confirmation from Get French Football News:

“The hyper-reliable La Voix du Nord report today that Premier League side Newcastle United have had an opening bid for Lille midfielder Thiago Maia rejected.

“The 21-year-old was bought by LOSC last summer for €14m.”

La Voix du Nord claim that Lille are reluctant to sell him, however the club are facing financial problems this summer so it looks like they may be forced to cash in at the right price – and with this in mind, they seem to think a second offer is likely.

Maia is a central midfielder who plays for Brazil U-23’s – having also represented his country during the 2016 Olympics in Rio (where he helped them beat Germany in the final.

He arrived at Lille just last summer, signing for £12m from Santos, and has impressed during his first season in Ligue 1.

One to watch – especially when he could be the man being eyed to replace Mikel Merino (who continues to be heavily linked with a return to Spain).
