North-East report reveals striker ‘under serious consideration’ at NUFC – A risky move by Rafa?

According to the Northern Echo, Salomon Rondon IS someone Newcastle are looking at this summer – claiming that a move for the West Brom striker is ‘under serious consideration’ as Benitez looks to bring in a new target man.

Following the Baggies relegation to the Championship last month, it was made known that the Venezuelan powerhouse had a £16m release clause in his contract – and we’ve been linked with a move several times since.

Many fans have reacted negatively to the idea of signing the 28-year-old – being a striker who’s averaged just over 9 goals a season during his three years in England – however it sounds like Benitez is a fan.

Here’s an interesting snippet from the Echo’s latest transfer piece, claiming a move for Rondon is ‘under serious consideration’:

“RAFA BENITEZ is looking for an update on Newcastle United’s transfer front in the early part of this week at a time when West Brom’s Salomon Rondon is under serious consideration.

“The Magpies are desperate to add at least one striker this summer and a range of players at home and abroad are being targeted.

“At a time when the fees being quoted to Premier League clubs for players is huge, what is reasonably attractive about Rondon is a £16m release clause.”

Personally, I’d be very surprised if he was at the top of Rafa’s list of targets due to his age, potential wage demands and average goal record at Premier League level, however it sounds like he’s being considered.

With 28 goals in three seasons at West Brom he’s hardly the prolific striker we’re crying out for, but he’s a real handful, a very hard worker and a solid target man – being someone I believe could fit surprisingly well into Rafa’s current system.

I know most are against the idea of signing him, but I’d be open to the idea IF we signed another goalscorer alongside.

Thoughts?
