After an ongoing row with the club’s president and violent attacks from fans, long-term target Bas Dost has terminated his contract at Sporting Lisbon – meaning he could technically join Newcastle on a free this summer!
Considering he’s been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside just about every single year since 2014, this is quite a story – and a development which won’t have gone unnoticed at NUFC.
It sounds quite convenient to bring back up the Bas Dost story after this sudden news, however it’s been reported several times in recent weeks that the Dutchman IS a striker Benitez likes.
Interestingly, the Chronicle recently revealed that Rafa tried to sign him last summer but was immediately priced out of a move – although that may not be as much of a problem this time around!
That being said, he still won’t come cheap, with agent fees and wage demands bound to be massive given the fact he’ll command no actual transfer fee.
Wow. Could the longest transfer saga in history be close to its end as Bas Dost is to be a free agent… https://t.co/3cbeyiDQWU

Dost isn’t the only one to have packed in at Sporting either, with him joining Rui Patrício, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes and Gelson Martins in terminating his contract.
Even if he brings big agent fees and a hefty wage packet, it could still be a relatively cheap deal as far as 34-goal strikers go!
Yep heavily linked – the same way Tammy Abrahams was linked, Tocsan was linked, even Lacazette was linked, Jurgensen…..
