Rafa Benitez set to make controversial move to bring ex-player back to NUFC – Report

Rafa Benitez is ‘keen’ on a deal to bring Andros Townsend back to St James’ Park this summer – eyeing a reunion with the winger just two years on from his move to Crystal Palace according to reports from the capital.

Townsend was signed by Steve McClaren in January 2016, however it was Rafa who really got the best out of the former Spurs wide-man- with him bagging 3 goals and 2 assists in the 10 games the Spaniard was in charge for at the back end of the 2015/16 season.

As we all know, we were unable to beat the drop and unable to keep a hold of Townsend as a result – with him joining Palace in a bid to keep his England and Premier League hopes alive.

It’s been made clear ever since that Rafa would like to bring him back, and it looks like he may make another bid to re-sign him this summer.

Here’s what the South London Press have had to say about Newcastle’s alleged interest:

“Newcastle United are interested in a deal to take Crystal Palace star Andros Townsend back to Tyneside.

“The 26-year-old joined the Eagles in July 2016 from the North-East outfit, after they triggered a release clause in his contract which was set at just over £15million.

“Prior to that, Toon boss Rafa Benitez had managed to get Townsend firing but was powerless to step the former Tottenham man from leaving.”

A lot of people would say he blew it when he jumped ship two years ago and wouldn’t want him back as a result, but I’d happily take him back myself.

Benitez is clearly a big fan of his and he himself was outstanding during his brief spell at the club. He was direct, a hard worker, created chances and carried a goal threat.

Yes he made a mistake giving up on us too easily, but he’d soon be forgiven if he came back and started firing.

Thoughts?

  1. You got bob hope and no hope of signing Townsend key player at palace and works his socks off. Good luck though the Toon like Newcastle and Rafa ?

  2. Hilarious that people are mad that he left. You do know you were relegated that season, right? Unless he was born and raised in Newcastle, and supported the club his entire life, he has no reason to play in the Championship (and likely take a pay cut) just to satisfy your blind ignorance.
