NUFC linked with potential part-exchange involving Mikel Merino & Argentinian international

Just a day on from claims that Real Sociedad are now in talks to sign Mikel Merino, reports in Spain suggest Newcastle have now ‘expressed an interest’ in signing their goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli – leading some to believe a part-exchange could be on the cards.

If true, it probably wouldn’t quite work like that, with part-exchanges seeming so rare in this day and age, but it’s an interesting thought as they pursue Merino and we hold alleged interest in Rulli – their goalkeeper.

Mundo Deportivo claim we have made an enquiry for the 26-year-old Argentinian stopper, following news from Spain yesterday that Real Sociedad’s president was jetting to England in a bid to ‘convince’ Newcastle to sell Merino.

I’m not sure about this one, with the need to sign another top goalkeeper seeming far from a priority, however the Chronicle have hinted that Benitez may want another goalkeeper this summer in response to these claims from Spain.

If Real Sociedad really do want Merino and we’re genuinely in for Rulli, maybe we’ll use the Spaniard as a bargaining tool?
