Sky Sports claim NUFC are ‘trying to sign’ 21-goal striker – an unrealistic move by Mike Ashley?

Sky Sports have confirmed that Nice striker Alassane Plea is someone Newcastle are ‘trying to sign’ this summer – however it seems we are not the only ones, with West Ham having already lodged a £27m bid for the striker.

This is the going rate for players who score 20+ goals in some of Europe’s top leagues, but a player demanding that sort of fee just seems unrealistic for us while Ashley’s in charge – even if Sky confirm we’re one of the clubs ‘trying’ to sign him.

The Ligue 1 striker bagged 21 goals for Nice last season and looks likely to join a Premier League side this summer as a result – although we’re not baking on that club being NUFC if the asking price is £10m more than our club record fee we’ve been waiting to see us break for 11 years.

Here’s a snippet from Sky’s latest article on the striker, confirming that we’re one of several clubs interested – but also confirming that West Ham have made a bid that is probably significantly more than we’d be willing to pay:

West Ham have made a £27m bid for Nice forward Alassane Plea with three other Premier League clubs also interested, according to Sky sources.

Newcastle, Fulham and Tottenham are all on the hunt for the services of the 25-year-old French striker, who scored 20 goals last season.

It is understood the French club are wanting 30m euros (£26.6m) with one other club having already made an offer of £25m.

A good player and no surprise to hear Rafa’s interested, but it looks so unlikely to come off for us at this price.

This is the battle Benitez faces this summer, however. Strikers do not come cheap – especially in this day and age – so being in dire need of one whilst working with a limited budget is far from easy.

Let’s hope we strike gold and find the prolific striker we’re crying out for.
