After we confirmed the signing of former Sunderland midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng, the Mackems have taken to social media to have their say – and they don’t sound bitter at all.
Ki – whose contract expired at Swansea this summer – spent a year on loan at the Stadium of Light during the 2013/14 season, bagging 4 goals, 3 assists and helping them to a 14th place finish in the Premier League.
I remember him often being one of their stand out players whenever I watched them back then, and I remember Sunderland fans raving about him soon after he signed – however their tune has well and truly changed now he’s arrived on Tyneside!
Here’s some amusing comments from Sunderland fans in response to the signing of Ki Sung-Yueng:
Amazing to see Ki has suddenly become an experienced international with tons of PL experience now he’s signed for the Mags rather than the bang average Swans squad player that bottled our relegation run in #SAFC

‘No player in the current NUFC squad has won more Tyne/Wear derbies than Ki Sung-Yeung & Jack Colback..
‘He’s an average player no more no less. He often gives the ball away under pressure, didn’t seem consistent to me when he was here and doesn’t surprise me that he hasn’t kicked on much
‘Interesting move. Another former SAFC player to sign for NUFC. Colback, Yedlin and now Ki – and none were anything more than functional for us. Wonder if they want Oviedo next?
‘Hopefully he will bottle relegation run in with the Mags
‘Lol Ki. Done f**k all since he left us and has a relegation on his career. Some boy! Aim for the sky, Newcastle!
‘Good to see the Mags showing ambition by signing a Sunderland reject for free..
‘Nice one Ki. Going to Newcastle after being loaned to Sunderland. Glad he has gone. One half of a tidy season and that was it’
‘Ki’s ok on the ball but he’s so lazy and has a bad attitude. Good luck with that Rafa!
Blimey, it’s like they’ve become the Stoke City of yester-year, taking all our cast offs!!
Interesting move. Another former #safc player to sign for #nufc. Colback, Yedlin and now Ki – and none were anything more than functional for us. Wonder if they want Oviedo next? https://t.co/7Z2dvcOdfJ

I can see why they’re frustrated in fairness. The only South Korean international they’d be able to attract these days is Lee-Gwon.
