Newcastle linked with ambitious move to sign Portuguese international – Report

According to Portuguese outlet ‘A Bola’, Newcastle are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes.

The 23-year-old playmaker bagged an outstanding 16 goals and 20 assists in 56 games last season, with that form earning him a place in Portugal’s World Cup squad this summer.

Unlike several Sporting Lisbon stars, he’s not cancelled his contract at the club, however it seems they’re facing a real fight to keep a hold of him.

His profile and recent form suggests he may have been identified by Rafa as a potential solution to our problems in the number 10 role, however there’s two issues with this story.

Firstly, Portuguese media tend not to be the most reliable and secondly, he’s a player who’d almost certainly cost north of £20m – and it remains to be seen as to whether Mike Ashley is willing to back Benitez with that sort of money this summer.
