Major transfer blow for Benitez as ‘top target’ agrees £22m move elsewhere – Medical tomorrow

Some bad news has emerged today on Rafa Benitez’s hunt for a new striker, with alleged ‘top target’ Alassane Plea now travelling to Germany ahead of a £22m move to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Both Sky and the Chronicle confirmed our £20m bid for the Nice striker last week, however it seems like we’re all set to miss out on the Frenchman after the Bundesliga side offered €25m (£22m) plus bonuses.

We don’t know the ins and outs, but this makes you wonder if we were every serious about signing him, with Borussia’s winning offer only marginally more than the £20m we offered just recently. Either that or he always preferred a move to Germany..

Both Plea and Rondon have been the two strikers doing the rounds in recent weeks, however it’s been said on several occasions since that the Nice striker was Rafa’s ‘top target’ out of the two.

Strikers are never easy to sign – especially when fees are so inflated in this day and age – however this doesn’t seem an unreasonable amount to pay for a striker who scored over 20 goals in France last season.

Kenedy’s arrival will soften any blow, with it being great news to hear he’ll spend another season on loan, however the signing of a prolific goalscorer is the big deal Benitez will be desperate to see done this summer.

Rafa will no doubt have other options, but may only add to his frustration as our wait goes on for a ‘proper’ striker at St James’ Park.

  1. Both lads comments are correct, chronicle live stated Newcastle went in 10 million cheaper than quoted price, that’s why we didn’t get him
