Rafa Benitez to reignite interest in Diego Laxalt after impressive World Cup?

With us having just one recognised left-back on our books, it’s fair to assume that Benitez will be looking to bring in competition for Paul Dummett this summer – and a move for former target Diego Laxalt would be an exciting one.

Sky Italy credited us with strong interest in the Uruguayan last summer (see below) and although a move did not materialise, Benitez is still yet to sign another left-back – and Laxalt looks like a very good one if his World Cup showings are anything to go by.

He showed impressive pace, energy and concentration (being the only player I’ve seen stop Kylian Mbappe so far!) and certainly caught the eye of several NUFC fans who may remember his name after the transfer links last summer (see fan comments at the bottom of the article)

The versatile 25-year-old has been at mid-table Serie A side Genoa for several seasons now and may just be tempted by a move to the Premier League, however his stock has almost certainly stock risen after several eye catching performances in Russia.

It’s hypothetical stuff, but I for one would love to see Benitez reignite his interest in Laxalt – a player who looks absolutely made for the Premier League – and it seems like NUFC fans would tend to agree!
