Just a few years ago, when Sam Allardyce’s Sunderland stayed up and Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle went down, the Mackems thought they were the Tyne and Wear’s top dogs. For a moment they actually were, but how times have changed..
It has emerged that they are now trying their best to bring Ivan Toney – our FIFTH choice striker – to the Stadium of Light ahead of their upcoming campaign in League One.
This comes from the Roker Report, who claim that the 22-year-old is a player they’re now ‘very interested’ in signing on loan this summer.
Here’s how NUFC fans have reacted to the news on social media:
Sunderland have been linked with Ivan Toney. Very experienced at League One level & scored 14 goals for Scunthorpe last season. Has been training at Newcastle's Academy this pre-season & not in Rafa Benitez's plans. #nufc #safc

“So if he does go, bangs in 30 goals, they get promoted (hopefully not) Can we say we got them promoted?”
“Allow them to sign him on loan with a recall clause, then just before their first game of the season, recall him.”
“Surely SAFC fans don’t want our cast offs? They’ve fallen far but that would be a new low.”
“Toney isn’t going to get a chance in our team, or the Championship – he’ll be relatively cheap as well so I can imagine they will pretend he never was on our books!”
“Sell only £5m. No loan. Plenty other club’s will be willing to pay that for him – where not a charity. He’s been on loan, scored goals so nothing to prove at League One level. If they want someone to fire them out of League One then pay to take him on a permanent deal or stop wasting our time – cheeky Mackems.”
“Agent Toney, prepare for deployment…”
“You know the Mackems are in a mess when they’re resorting to loan deals for our fifth or sixth choice striker!”
“Almost feel a bit sorry for them. Imagine us being in LEAGUE ONE, forced to sign one of their rejects. Deary me.”
“Ivan Toney, Christ…”

Whether we actually do them a favour and sanction a move remains to be seen, but it’s news that’s been met with some amusement (and surprise) on Tyneside – with the Mackems coming crawling across for a favour from Rafa Benitez.
I appreciate that some of the less gracious United fans gain a very bizarre and base pleasure from the Mackems’ suffering but Toney to Sunderland would be a decent move for all concerned – especially on loan.
It really is time some Toon fans grew up and reserved their competitive spirit with the great unwashed for a time when they are actually competitors.
Kicking a club when they’re down (2 divisions down) hardly demonstrates admirable qualities.

He’s better than what they’ve got.
I feel sorry for their new boss
Hasnt got the money to waste like Allardyce and Moyes did

As another above me said, you lot weren’t exactly restrained in your celebrations
Then when we came back and you went down you were wailing it somehow “wasn’t right” we did unto you what you were keen to do to us – exactly the same, remember
Its going to get worse before it gets better for you – the new manager will need 2 seasons just to sort out the mess left by previous regimes, with a chairman who comes across as a fairground attraction manager

The mackems are deluded. They rekon theyre winning the league this season… let them have ivan if only to prevent them a 3rd successive relegation which is on thd cards i rekon
