Journalist confirms NUFC’s interest in Bournemouth star during latest transfer update

During his latest transfer round-up for the Chronicle, Mark Douglas has confirmed that Bournemouth’s Josh King is ‘another target’ of Rafa Benitez’s this summer – suggesting the striker could be an alternative to the recently linked Salomon Rondon.

Neither of the two are proven Premier League strikers, with both tending to struggle to hit double figures in the top flight, however King is perhaps the more exciting option out of the two?

He bagged 16 league goals in 2016/17 – more than Rondon has managed in his last two seasons (15) – and is also two and a half years younger.

Rafa was linked with a move for King last summer but, as always seems to the case with NUFC, I imagine an asking price north of our current transfer record brought our interest to an end.

Here’s what Mark Douglas has had to say on both during the Chronicle’s transfer round up last night, admitting that King is a target despite claims that it’s Rondon we’ll now go for:

“The Daily Star on Sunday claim Rondon – who has a £16.5million release clause – is now Newcastle’s prime target. “They report: “West Brom frontman Salomon Rondon, 28, is a top target” as United look to make three new additions to the squad.

“A striker is the priority in this transfer window for Newcastle – with Bournemouth’s Josh King understood to be another target.”

He’d probably still cost us something close to £20m, but that may be better business than signing Rondon at his £16.5m release clause?

Having missed out on Plea – who completed a £22m move to Germany despite our alleged £20m offer – Rafa will reassessing his options and it would not surprise me if we reignite our interest in King.

He voiced his frustrations earlier this summer about being played out of position by Eddie Howe (not as an out an out striker, which he prefers) so he seems unsettled and may be open to a move.

Would you be happy if we looked at King to solve our goalscoring problems?
