Benitez ‘pushing hard’ to seal double deal – Striker & Centre-back heading to NUFC this week?

According to Lee Ryder, Rafa Benitez is now ‘pushing hard’ to get ‘at least’ one signing in at Newcastle United before this week’s trip to Portugal – and it looks like it’s Salomon Rondon and Fabian Schar who’ve been lined up by the Spaniard.

A deal to sign Rondon has dragged on in typical Newcastle United fashion – with us appearing reluctant to pay his £16.5m release clause – but The Chronicle have confirmed that ‘talks’ with West Brom are ‘set to continue today’ during their promising transfer update this morning.

Then to Schar – the Swiss international centre-back who’s emerged as a target this morning. Ryder confirms that he is a player we’ve been pursuing over the last ’48 hours’ and it seems like Rafa plans to activate his £3m release clause.

Read it for yourself here, with the following being stated by Lee Ryder in the Chronicle’s promising transfer piece this morning:

‘Rafa Benitez is pushing hard to get at least one more summer signing done before Newcastle United depart for Portugal at the end of the week.

‘United boss Benitez feels that progress can be made in the next couple of days if things go to plan as he looks to fill what he has described as “key positions”.

‘Switzerland international Fabian Schar is a player that Newcastle are believed to have checked out in the last 48 hours with the centre-back keen to quit Deportivo de La Coruna after relegation.

‘Talks with West Bromwich Albion for striker Salomon Rondon are also set to continue today after Newcastle rejected a loan bid from the Baggies for Dwight Gayle over the weekend.’

Given Deportivo’s relegation (and probably need to sell), his minimal release clause and our need for a centre-back, surely the Schar deal is one we’ll be able to get done?

The Rondon situation seems a little more tricky and may rely on Mitrovic’s move to Fulham becoming official, but that also seems like a deal we can get done if we finally decide to pull our finger out.

Would you be happy to have both?

  1. We’re back where we were last summer – we had to be happy with The Hoss! 😈
These 2 should represent the absolute bare minimum signings needed to avoid relegation.
We may well be rock bottom after the first 8 games, by the end of October, with few, if any points. 😡

  2. Do not understand why Benitez is obsessed with trying to sign Rondon. Will be another waste of money. Must be better strikers available.
