According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo, Mexican international centre-back Diego Reyes is now ‘very close’ to completing a move to Newcastle United.
Both Sky Sports and The Chronicle confirmed our interest in the 25-year-old last week, with him now available on a free having failed to sign a new contract with Porto, however it was suggested at the time that Rafa may look at other targets instead.
Since that was said, both Deportivo’s Fabian Schar (£3m release clause) and Swansea’s Federico Fernandez (loan) have been strongly linked, however these new claims suggest it could be Diego Reyes who is arriving to replace Chancel Mbemba:

Despite alleged interest from West Ham and Fenerbahce, this exclusive from CalcioMercato claims that he is now ‘very close’ to completing a move to St James’ Park – suggesting he could even sign in the coming days.
Best to take this with a pinch of salt, but with Mbemba now sold, a new centre-back will be high on the agenda..
