NUFC now trying to sign Switzerland international – £3.5m release clause

As confirmed by The Chronicle, Newcastle are now interested in a deal to sign Swiss international centre-back Fabian Schar – with reports in Spain also revealing that he has a release clause of just £3.5m.

With Chancel Mbemba’s move to Porto expected to go through (even if it’s dragging on something rotten), Rafa is clearly on the look out for cover – and it looks like Schar may be the man he’s now trying to sign.

The 26-year-old played for his country during this summer’s World Cup, however he’s not been so lucky at club level over the past year, seeing his Deportivo La Coruna side relegated to the Spanish second tier.

He’s now expected to move on as a result and it sounds like he’ll be available on the cheap, with reports in Spain claiming we could now activate his £3.5m release clause following relegation.

With Benitez clearly working on a very limited budget, would this be a smart signing to replace Mbemba?
