As confirmed by Sky Sports in the last few moments, Newcastle have now activated Fabian Schar’s £3m release clause – with the Swiss centre-back now due on Tyneside today to complete his medical.
Despite links to Swansea’s Federico Fernandez and Mexican international Diego Reyes, a deal for the 26-year old Deportivo defender had been described as Benitez’s preferred option – and it looks like he’s got his man.
The Mirror suggested this morning that a deal had been struck and this has now been confirmed by Sky’s North-East reporter Keith Downie:
Newcastle have activated the £3m release clause of Deportivo La Coruña defender Fabian Schar. We understand Swiss international is due on Tyneside for a medical today.

Not only does a £3m deal seems like an absolute snip for a player of his pedigree and experience, his signing will come as a welcome addition following the sale of Chancel Mbemba and news of a potential injury to Florian Lejeune.
Hopefully this is one of several deals we can get done between now and August 9th, with a number of new signings still needed both up top and at the back.
