NUFC fans asked if they’d swap West Brom’s Rondon for Dwight Gayle – Very interesting results

After confirmation from The Chronicle that we are now pursuing a potential ‘swap deal’ deal involving Dwight Gayle and Salomon Rondon, we came across an interesting poll online asking fans which striker they’d prefer to see at Newcastle United.

The poll (via fan page @BlackWhiteBarmy) received 762 votes, with a whopping 72% of fans voting for Rondon – and just 28% for current the current NUFC number 9 Gayle.

An interesting result.

Gayle hardly performed in front of goal last season, scoring just 6 in 38 appearances, but most fan’s reaction to Rondon’s potential arrival has been an underwhelming one at best – with him having scored just 7 in 36 games himself last term (albeit in a relegated West Brom side managed by Pulis and Pardew!)

Personally, my vote would go to Rondon. He may not be prolific, but he suits Rafa’s system better than Gayle – being ideal to play in that lone striker role in a counter attacking team – and he’ll give any centre-back a game in terms of the physical presence he offers.

Here’s some comments from NUFC fans in response to the poll:

“Gayle done a great job for us in the championship last season, but thats what he is. A very good championship player.

“Not much between them I don’t think, just feel it’d be good to freshen things up. Seems like Gayles time is up last season seem a real struggle

“Rondon, only because imo Gayle is more of a Championship Striker. Think he will struggle for us again in the premier league. But, not a big fan of Rondon either.”

“I back neither to get over 10 goals in the PL, but Rondon’s far more of a handful.”

“Easily Rondon. Neither score a great deal but Rondon offers much more in terms of his all round game.”

Who would get your vote folks?

  1. I still maintain that Rondon could get into double figures for a decent side that wasn’t just set up to spoil like Pulis’s teams. He’s not a donkey like Joselu by any stretch and actually scored at a decent rate before moving to West Brom, albeit in weaker leagues.

    PremAndUp:
Last year Gayle with Joseluu off the bench.
This year Muto with Rondon off the bench.
Still need a replacement for Mitro

Muto and Rondon will either both be playing, with Muto playing off him, or Rondon will start. I will never understand this love for Mitrovic. Look at his record. Even when factoring in sub appearances it’s not all that impressive. Add in his temperament and lack of speed and I’d take Rondon over him easily. If he goes and scores 15-20 goals for Fulham this season I’ll look like a bit of a plum, but only time will tell. Even if that does happen though it won’t change the fact that Rafa doesn’t see him as fitting in in his team and the way he wants to play.

  2. Rondon would do a lot better for Newcastle than wba simply because they would make a lot more chances wba didn’t suit his game he is a very good player who gives his all and he will score goals I have no doubt ,Newcastle will get a very good player

  4. Gayle has proven he isn’t a premier league player even though he tries his heart out he just can’t get regular goals, Joselu is worse, why not try Rondon even though I’m not convinced any one f them is right for us but we are now officially bottom feeders it seems so hey….whatever you want to do
