Exclusive – NUFC now pursuing £8m deal to sign World Cup left-back – Report

Newcastle are now interested in an £8m deal to sign Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico according to an ‘exclusive’ from The Sun this afternoon – however Fulham are also said to be keen.

The 25-year old left-back was strong linked with a move to St James’ Park in the final few days of the transfer window last summer, although he ended up leaving the Argentinian League for Ajax instead – costing the Dutch side just shy of £4m.

He was also in action in Russia this summer, featuring in all of Argentina’s games during a disappointing tournament for the South Americans.

We’ll take this with a pinch of salt given it comes from The Sun, but Benitez is clearly keen to sign another left-back – with Paul Dummet being our only genuine option in that area at present – so it could make a lot of sense for Rafa to go back in for the Argentinian.

It’s claimed that Wolfsburg and Schalke are also keen, with themselves and Benitez said to have been ‘alerted’ by news that he’s available for just £8m this summer.

Given we’re very much in for a new left-back and Rafa’s showed interest in the past, there *might* just be something in this..

  2. Apparently he’s decent in the centre as well even though he’s only about 5’8. Two of his strengths are apparently aerial duels and holding onto the ball so he seems to belie his height. He’d be a handy player to have if he has that sort of flexibility.

  3. If we’re battling Fulham for the signing of a player… He almost certainly won’t be coming to Newcastle over an ambitious London club who actually spend money

  4. Absolutely nothing story….it was an error on another site from a story from 2017
    Complete desperation and garbage!!!
I’m sick of reading us being linked with 200 players a week…how do I see the weeks for the trees

Chronicle have now confirmed our interest..

I see that it was brought up again thanks for a retweet of a tweet from August 2017 on Twitter, but The Chronicle have responded to The Sun’s claims here saying it’s true..
