According to some incredible claims from the Spanish FA , Newcastle United were in fact the ones who offered Rafa Benitez to Spain for the World Cup in Russia – with us sending a ‘letter’ to their FA just two days after Julen Lopetegui’s sacking.
This is unbelievable and further proof of just how incompetent those in charge of running NUFC really are.
Imagine having a world class manager in charge, who’s determined to build on our 10th place finish and see the club show some ambition this summer, only to be OFFERING him around over the summer – a period where most clubs would be determined to keep their manager in a bid to deliver new signings.
As many of you will know, ex-Spain boss Julen Lopetegui was sacked just days before the tournament’s big kick off in Russia, leaving Spain searching for a new boss two days before their opening game.
It had seemed as though they came looking for Rafa – an offer we were led to believe that he rejected – however the Preseident of the Spanish FA (Luis Rubiales) has now admitted that it was in fact Newcastle who got in touch to put his name forward for the job!
Here’s what Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales has had to say about it today:
“When I sacked Julen I immediately called Hierro and told him I didn’t want to make changes.
“Two days later a letter arrived from NUFC saying ‘Are you interested in our coach? He’s at your disposition.’
“We said “thanks but no”.
“We would have never done that, we couldn’t hire Benitez because it would have been acting in the same way for which we reproached Julen.”
Benitez admitted recently that he had “a chance” of managing Spain over this summer’s World Cup, however he also insisted in the same interview that he was ‘happy to be here’ at NUFC.
So, not only are the board doing their utmost to give Benitez nothing to spend this summer, it appears as though they were offering him out on ‘loan’ to help Spain’s World Cup campaign – sending a letter to the Spanish FA to offer his services!
