Newcastle 1-2 Tottenham: Plenty positives to take but we deserved a point

This time last year we played Spurs on the opening day and, although the result today was the same (another defeat) the two performances were poles apart. There were plenty positives to take.

We were camped in our own half when we played them a year ago, we barely had an effort on goal and didn’t really lay a glove on them. Yes Shelvey’s red card changed the game back in August 2017, but we went toe to toe to them today and showed once again that we’re more than capable of competing at this level.

Unfortunately, we’ve come away pointless once again today, but it was a performance that will give plenty people hope for the 37 games of the season that now remain.

Kenedy was absolutely brilliant. Strong, skilful and the one player who was constantly driving us forward. Comfortably our best player on the pitch, although Ritchie also impressed – with his cross for Joselu’s goal being one of the best deliveries you’re likely to see all season.

On the subject of Joselu, it was great to see him get an early confidence boost. He actually put in a decent shift and wasn’t that bad, but we’ll only get better once Rondon and Muto find their feet.

Rondon looks a handful (albeit not yet match fit) and Muto made some really intelligent runs, with both playing a part in the last half an hour – although the game seemed to fizzle out really. Spurs tired and we did too.

Ritchie was fuming to be replaced and you can see why when you look at how little Atsu offered when he came on. He looked half asleep and offered absolutely nothing.

On another day we’d have got a point. Kenedy’s one-on-one, Rondon hit the woodwork and Diame smashed the post – all chances that we weren’t creating when we played them this time last season.

Spurs are a quality side – and they fielded a much stronger side than most were expecting – but we’ll be frustrated by the two goals we’ve conceded. One set piece and another where we’ve just switched off at the back post – although the cross from Aurier was outstanding.

The one big worry is the injury Yedlin seems to have picked up. It doesn’t look good. He landed awkwardly on his knee and could barely even make his way up the steps as he headed down the tunnel for treatment.

He was poor today, but that’s not the point. Our lack of cover in that area is bad enough without him facing a long spell on the sidelines. I wonder why Rafa was asking for full-back cover on deadline day..

Cardiff away next weekend. Play like that again and we won’t be pointless for long.

Aye the kid has just turned 28 too, don’t think he will have the nuts to run something like that,he has a nightclub bet jabba bought that as well

I wonder if it will work out as well as the executives Ashley installed to run NUFC – Jiminez, Wise, Joe Kinnear, Lliambas to name a few. Then he let the Chief Scout and Accountant have a go 🙂

  3. When the deal happened the media were quick to assure us that the buy out had nothing to do with the NUFC money – and the purchase was made by SD.
I tend to believe the bit about it not being the NUFC money, but I wonder what the rest of the SD share holders make of Ashley appointing his son in law to oversee a big part of their overall business.

I also wonder how long it will be before we see HoF adverting around SJP?! – or will that be the HoF stadium?!.

Jabba will be running the show. His son will be “running HoF” like Penfold “runs” NUFC.

I don’t Penfold is even an accountant is he? He was the secretary when Llambias was MD.

  6. Of course an obvious fact that is perhaps easily overlooked is that anyone with an ounce of credibility would refuse to work with or for Mike Ashley in such a capacity – and so therefore he has to turn to ‘friends’ (parasites with equally low morals who know they can make money as his yes men. Remora fish)
or family members – the ones happy to take his meal tickets.

I think back to Richard Branson and when he bought out Northern Rock and changed it to Virgin money. We had a real opportunity to get him to invest – isn’t he a toon fan – or there was some reported connection I seem to remember.
If our club was ran by people who give a **** about football and had any kind of ambition – they would know that that was an alliance that could have grown the club.
But bringing a proper businessman in, one who wouldn’t cut corners or make do – that would never work.

There is somewhere between £120m-£150m that we have made this summer (between player sales, PL and TV money). Given the choice of spending it on players, or clearing the debt owed to Ashley – I’d have liked another £30m spent on players and the rest to clear the debt to Ashley.
Clearing that debt is the main way of getting rid of him I think. If his asking price is £400m – give him £100m from that money and bring that price down to £300m – Staverley offered that and it is a figure that would get a serious buyer I think.

  7. Stuart: Rafa always says to talk to Charnley about the money. I don’t think he has accounting credentials but someone has to know the big picture and you can’t rely on outside accountants for that. Who knows the structure at NUFC though, it doesn’t seem to work like any other PL club where the MDs get 500k and up and Charnley gets 150k. I don’t even think we have a board of directors anymore. Since it is a private company I don’t think they need one and it is Penfold and the Fatman only.

He’s playing in MLS so your point is well made. Did you notice that the goalie was up for the corner so Wayne had no choice but to cover. Still a great piece of play which he is occasionally capable of and I don’t deny. In never did, I just thought his overall contribution had become so bad and that him just doing whatever he wanted made him a liability in the PL.

But just to balance things out – Wilshere worst player on the pitch yesterday 🙂 They have to realise he is not a number 10 or they are screwed.

  10. Fat Sam on talksport offering Emery advice on how to play City. He said don’t always try to play out from the back. I would have said play a different goalie to Cech to start with. But, last game BFS’s Everton played City had 81% possession and I am sure that I remember they set a PL record for number of passes in a game. So, yes BFS has their number and maybe he would be more gainfully employed shining Unai Emery’s trophies.

  11. Will Yedlin be a big miss? Him and Ritchie together offer no height and that was a problem against Spurs. Can see the same problem with other teams like Fulham and Man U.

Maybe it is not just the height, I think Kimtoon has always questioned his positioning. I am not meaning to kick a player when he is injured, he just didn’t really look comfortable in the 1st half on Saturday. Maybe it is partly that Alli is a good player?

Actually, it is probably best to question him when he is injured because we will see what the competition is and I can’t be accused of not backing the team.

  13. Eric, yes mate I have always worried about Yeddies positioning, like janmaat and Debbie before him , great going forward but really poor defensively which given that’s primarily their job, well………..
Mind you Ritchie let Ali get a run on him when level to start with for his goal and it did leave Yeddy with lots to do to be fair. Lascelles also had his back to Kane in the box so it was a collective team fail on the day.
I’m old fashioned I like my defenders to master defensive play before worrying about bombing forwards . Yedlin had a torrid time to be fair on Saturday, not getting back quick enough and out of position more than once. He was improving back end of last season though , so hopefully once fit again can continue to do so.

Kim – my guess would be Manquillo. My problem with him is that he always looks disinterested – i never feel like he’s giving us his all (but if he is, then his all isn’t good enough).
Fernandez is another option to go in at RB – but I don’t think that’s a good option. He’s a CB and doesn’t really have the pace for FB.

I suspect Rafa will try to keep things as much the same as possible, so probably Manq in at RB and stick with 4-2-3-1 … but I’d give my formation a try.

  17. Rafa’s generally pretty conservative about changes so I’d expect just a change of Manquillo (he speaks Spanish don’t you know) for Yedlin. I’ve heard nothing re Yedlin’s injury. Anyone else?

In time, they won’t even have to go to the games or training and can just tell us 5 things they learnt discussing NUFC amongst themselves doon the pub. Of course they will still have to go on the overseas trips (junkets).

  21. I will add to Olly’s “9 things he learned”. When Atsu was coming on I was sure Kenedy was coming off. That was the pattern last year when Rafa would pull him when he was slowing down on 60-70 mins. Now he can last the full game. In hindsight Ritchie should also have stayed on but can we please not write Atsu off after 20 minutes. He played a few decent games last season and also played through an injury.

Eric – I’ve only swapped 1 defender for 1 forward. I’d go with it against the weaker teams coz I wouldn’t want to depend too heavily on Ritchie and Kenedy as full backs against the better sides. Unless we tweaked the personnel a bit.
Played the right way, I don’t think we would loose too much defensively – but yeah, I would hope with that extra forward, it might improve things in the final third – let’s face it, that’s where the problem is.

  30. Ice – the trouble is Ashley is surrounded by dickheads like Bishop and Wise filling his head full of nonsense and kissing his ****.
Wise says ‘what’s the problem selling players and bring players in and making a profit’ – the problem Dennis, is you are selling players and bringing players in on loan – they aren’t our players and that’s asset stripping. The other problem is, where’s that profit going?! – your mate is still owed £144m apparently. How do you turn a profit and still have so much debt?!.

I wonder if little Dennis Wise then thinks that everyone else who has spent money is wrong then?!. It does leave me perplexed by these so called journalists and pundits who have a go at Rafa for wanting more money for a CF that we desperately need – but then wax lyrical about Lpool spending £70m on a keeper coz it’s a position that needed strengthening, spending £75m on a CB coz they needed to strengthen their defence.
They can literally go from saying Ashley has a good business and Newcastle fans have to get on with it – to the next chat being about how right are to spend £150 on 4 quality players rather than 8 mediocre ones.

I understand the point Shola was trying to make – look at what’s happened to the likes of Villa and Sunderland (and I dare bet it will be a similar story for Stoke and Swansea if they don’t get promoted straight back up).
But no toon fan is asking Ashley to spend money that is going to risk the club – we are asking for a fair crack of the whip. There is a balance to be struck. I’m fine with loaning some players and taking some on a free if they are good players – I think the ones we got are. But spend!! – pay the £6m for Bryan, pay the £5m for Perez and get Rafa his ACM – using a player we were linked with Valon Berisha who went to Lazio for £6.75m. There is a total spend of just under £18m – we had a £20m profit from player sales – so it’s still a balanced transfer market.
All of that TV/PL money banked – used to clear debt or whatever he’s using it for.
We still wouldn’t have broke out transfer record. Our most expensive player would still have been less than £10m – but honestly, I don’t care. If Rafa got the players he needed – and those 3 players have all been linked with us, then that’s all that matters.
The point I’m making is that that is a fairly inexpensive balance to strike. It’s backing your manager, and could be the difference of Rafa staying or not.

      (Quote)

  31. Apparently Jabba doesn’t agree with the current transfer market prices. And? What does that mean then? We just go backwards because the owner doesn’t like the market? What’s the point in having £100m in the bank as a football club? Anfootie club is run to reinvest all it’s profits. Clearly Jabba isn’t taking dividends out so what the hell are we to do with the money? Maybe he’s waiting until there’s a transfer market crash and we will be sitting pretty with £500m in the bank. Of course, we will all have been bored to death by then…

      (Quote)

  32. Stu – he sold Mitro for £22m!!. If a club came in and offered £50m for Lascelles he’d turn it down coz he’d feel they were paying too much?!?!!!.

His argument works if Rafa was asking for a £70m keeper or £100m centre forward. But as I say above, he could have spent £6m on Bryan, £5m on Lucas Perez and £6.75m on Berisha and still made a small profit on player sales without touching the TV/PL money.

  35. Sharpy – His actions also point to him not agreeing with the market. He hasn’t paid more than £14.5m has he for a player? We paid more on Shearer 20 years ago than Jabba has allowed us to spend on a player since he’s been here.

Stu – that’s right mate, and some of those players who cost more have probably further put him off – I’m thinking of players like Thauvin, Cabella and Murphy. He likely also looks at the season when he did put money in, it resulted in relegation – so why bother.

  37. This talksport poll where they are saying Ashley is saving 17,000 jobs would come back to bite them if they ever mention it again – which they won’t. There were already 31 planned House of Fraser store closures and I am sure the unprofitable ones in smaller towns will still be closed. I am also sure that they will renegotiate leases because the bankruptcy allows it and that some stores will be made into multipurpose sites which is not a bad thing because they would have been closed otherwise. There will be layoffs and it will be thousands, it is just that talksport will NEVER mention them.

The pension issue will come up but that is what the guarantee fund is for. Companies pay a premium into it and if they go bankrupt the fund pays the benefits. They are lower than if the company remained solvent but this would have happened regardless of who took over HoF, or if no one had.

I have no idea why these ex-footballers are even getting involved in this issue when they know nothing about it. Maybe they want to weigh in on Middle East civil rights and should ask would PSG fans rather spend 200 million on Neymar or watch a public flogging in Qatar?

This injury cannot be that bad if he is not on crutches? Maybe 3 months instead of 6 months? Zlatan was back in about 4 and his was bad. Oxlade Chamberlain did 3 of his ligaments and is out for the season but this looks much more hopeful for Lejeune.

Maybe a local paper could ask a surgeon, or Newcastle doctor about recovery times?

I’m under the physio at the moment cause the back of the other knee is a problem cause I have a knotted hamstring which they give deep massage for.

I wrote quite a bit about Keys and Gray that most will probably not want to read so let me sum up. Their show is **** and nobody goes on it except their has-been Pals, probably because of the Sky sexism sacking and not wanting to be associated with that. Both the fat fks are now desperate for attention because nobody watches them any more so referring NUFC twitter trolls to the Police is about where they are at.

  45. Why did I watch it then? It was interesting to watch what Pards and BFS would say after their latest sacking/departure. What they would say about other Managers with a straight face, especially about tactics. BFS is doing it this weekend on talksport about Emery.

The stupid Refs haven’t cottoned on yet and it is usually just a clip so they never give yellows. It is deliberate though and has exactly the same result as when a player is pulled back. Keep an eye on this as I don’t think anybody has mentioned it as all of the Journo’s and pundits are too busy bowing down at the altar of Pep.

  52. Isn’t it mad to think that before social media took over our lives, people would just have to shrug their shoulders, maybe shake a fist at morons like Richard Keys and their opinions.

Do these people really think by leaving a comment of insult on Keys twitter account, that he’s going to change his mind, or apologise.

  53. Eric Sykes:
Oh, and Keys and Gray (and Wise to an extent but at least he worked for Ashley) are saying things deliberately controversial to appear still relevant. I don’t know if anyone apart from Icedog and me have watched their show but I will explain it (maybe DT).

2 Fat Men in uncomfortable suits standing in front of a big TV screen. They will then have perhaps 1 studio guest who is usually a has-been footballer or Manager (Peter Reid last week) and some visitors on skype. Usually, it will be a player or Chairman of a lower League team. Keys and Gray will flatter and suck up for about 5 minutes about some obscure subject and then move on to “Britain’s Best Sports Journalist” as they call him, John Cross of The Daily Mirror. “Crossey” will point the sykpe camera up his nose and bang on about Arsenal for 10 minutes.

Sign off, do a couple more tugs at their suit jackets since they are now 2 sizes too small after 10 years of overindulgence in Qatar and rinse and repeat next week.

Eric, I know what you mean… I have no choice here if I want to see premiership footy as it’s all Bein.. I cannot stand Keys and Grey … I suffer then during the half time breaks but will not watch them on any other show. Pond life the pair of them.

  55. I am still not getting why Keys would report trolls to the Police. First option block them, then contact twitter. Why would the Police be involved unless it was something like a death threat? If it was something like calling him a nonce like Kimtoon said, I would seriously charge him with wasting Police time. They can’t though because he is a minor celebrity and he would use his soap box to call the Police out.

I remember Delboy calling Rodney a nonce on Only Fools and Horses. Should he have reported him to the Police?

  56. Ashley will lay off at least half of the HoF staff as the plans were already in the works. He is not the one who said he was a white knight it is idiots on talksport. They will have to eat crow if they ever bring it up again. He can also talk about it being the Harrods of the Highstreet. That is a total pipedream and what he means is he will take the remaining stores upscale. Has anybody been in Harrods? It is 90% Yank and Chinese tourists wanting their green bags. You will not be getting that in Macklesfield HoF.

Anyway, enough of that. It is Talksport conflating 2 issues and 2 different entities owned by Ashley. Sports Direct buying HoF has no impact on Mash Holdings spending money on NUFC players. I assume Talksport knows this but they want to rile up their dumb audience. I have no idea what their motive is. That is not rhetorical. Seriously, I have no idea what their motive is. What do they get for cheerleading for Mike Ashley?

Is it something to do with their narrative of delusional, thick Geordies?

  57. Eric, talksport is owned by Sky now and is as big a mouth piece for Jabba as SSN is mate.
That’s the reason colin murray left the station , cause of his Liverpool connections .
No integrity from any of them now, all have an pre set agenda to suit their masters.

Ice – I saw the clip and he didn’t look like he was driving at the time. The car looked stationary coz you could see a reflection of someone in the window. I’m not sure if the engine was running like and that constitutes an offence.
I’m sure an £80 fine and wrap on the knuckles won’t bother him too much like.

  60. Should Rodgers get sacked? He was talked about for the Leicester job in the summer but you would think the minimum requirement would be to get to a CL knockout qualifier. Scottish Pub League Champions is not enough when your nearest “rival” has a 10th of the money.

  61. Rafa was after a #10 before the window closed. Ben Arfa is still available on a free, and it looks like Ross McCormick will leave Villa on a free. He’d never be first choice, but I reckon he could fit the bill short term – I reckon he would chip in with some goals.

Eric – I saw at the weekend there is already talk of Puel getting sacked with Roberto Martinez placing him (who happened to just be in the crowd against Man Utd on Fri night).
They allowed him to spend substantial money and bring in a new assistant in the summer, then put the pressure on after just one game – madness!!.

  63. Did anyone notice the comment that Charnley shelved the investigation into the alleged rascism and bullying in the academy to concentrate on the transfer window. That was a successful outcome then .. little progress on either
