I can see why they’d be keen, with Clark proving in our promotion season just what a good defender he is at that level, but I can see Benitez flatly rejecting any offer that may arrive.
He may not keep Fabian Schar or Federico Fernandez out of Rafa’s starting 11 for much longer, but he’s proven he can do a job in the side (which is essential in Lejeune’s absence) and can also operate at left-back at a push (a problem position for us).
Nevertheless, here’s what the Bristol Live have said about Villa’s interest:
“A move for Ciaran Clark may not be out of the question for Aston Villa.
“Although rumours at the moment are in their earliest stages, the move could make sense for Clark – who faces a tough time getting into the Newcastle first team at present.
“Aston Villa have made a fine start to the season but the consistency and passion that Clark offers as a home-grown Villa player mean it could make sense.
“All fans across the Championship will be hoping their club can add during the loan window.”
I can’t see this one happening for a second.
Why would we push to sign another centre-back on deadline day and then let one of Rafa’s trusted options leave just a few weeks on?
Sorry Villa, but it’ll almost certainly be a no from Benitez – especially on loan; a move that does nothing to benefit NUFC.
