Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle: A woeful display on so many levels

On a day where we should’ve been targeting a comfortable three points, we’ve ended up crawling over the line against a newly promoted Cardiff – in a game that has to go down as one of the most frustrating watches as a Newcastle United fan.

Quite incredibly, our 10 men could and should have won it late one, only for Kenedy to see his tame 96th minute penalty saved. How he was allowed to take it after such a dreadful display is beyond me.

We deserved nothing from that. Us taking a point will be bad enough if you’re a Cardiff fan, so the fact we very nearly took all three is quite unbelievable really.

It was an absolutely shocking first half. So many cheap free kicks and corners (which was infuriating given this would’ve clearly been identified as their best route to a goal) so little options on the ball, a lack of intensity and a total lack of quality.

Manquillo was dreadful (and was hauled off by Rafa at the break), Diame wasn’t nearly as influential as we’ve seen recently, Perez was woeful and an isolated Joselu frustrated. That being said, it’s unfair to pick out too many individuals when the collective performance was WAY below what we showed against Spurs last Saturday.

Our first half was perhaps summed up by the fact Kenedy had failed to complete a single pass in 45 minutes of action (the first Premier League player to do this since 2010)  – and he should’ve seen red after kicking out at Victor Camarasa!

It could only get better in the second half – but it got worse.

We showed no urgency, lacked intensity and our discipline was non existent – which was summed up by Isaac Hayden’s reckless challenge that saw him sent off with 25 minutes left on the clock. He may be frustrated that a move hasn’t materialised, but it was idiotic. Both he, Kenedy and Manquillo could’ve seen red.

With City, Chelsea and Arsenal up next, it’s fair to say our performance level will have to be upped considerably if we want to avoid an absolute towelling or two.

A woeful and worrying display, but at least it’s a point!

  1. A reality check for those who believe Kenedy is a wonder boy. The worst player on the pitch (and that’s saying something) was never going to score that penalty. Did he actually do anything positive at all today? Headless chicken we’ve heard of so many others. This performance was the ultimate example.
By the way I am always of the glass half full type but don’t quite see what others do in the Brazilian.

  3. The players were ***** today – I don’t need to point that out to anyone. Zero passion, motivation or quality. Shelvey was the only one who seemed to try but was surrounded by *****. We nicked a draw so if we scored that pen I think a public apology would have been in order.

But I for will put blame on Rafa too. Before a ball was kicked, how many were confident in that starting 11??.

Kenedy was horrible today, yet he left him on and took Ritchie off?!?!?!!!

  4. If Kenedy gets a three match ban perhaps Roberts should be given a short appearance. I am not too keen on Atsu. I think he has been given too many chances and failed to show he is good enough. Of course Roberts lacks Premiership experience but today he couldn’t have been worse than Kenedy. I also think we should encourage our young players. Other teams do. I think we should let Hayden go. He wants to be away and may have an unsettling effect on the team. He’s not that good. He was ok in the Championship.

  5. You couldn’t make it up.. now Mitro scores for Fulham… I would let Hayden go… his heart is not in it and he wants away… still time for h8m to go to a championship side on loan.

Don’t know what’s up wit( Kenedy… our best player last week and dreadful this week.

Ings scores and then Wilson for Bournemouth…

Finally, someone has presented the other view about Ashley. I have a really hard time listening to Carragher because of that high pitched Scouse accent but when I do he usually makes sense. Actually, I usually read his column in The Telegraph to avoid his voice. So, by my count it is 7-1 in favour of Ashley.

What I liked about what he said was that Jabba had his side of the story getting out there through media and papers ect… He then went on to explain why it isn’t working and Jabba is wrong.

Sharpy, just have a think about the people who are backing him. Sky TV leak his little messages from Harold Bishop and that’s because David Craig is also a client of Bishops. Denis Wise who got employed by Ashley and got a pay off. Richard Keys, who two years ago was slagging Ashley off. He’s only backi g ashley now because he dislikes Rafa so much – always has.

But it should have been Muto for Joselu. Ayoze has not looked sharp but he always has it in him to get a goal with a flick. Joselu doesn’t and was absolutely woeful.

Still feeling super pissed off at that penalty miss… seriously we get something 2 in 2 years, and promptly miss both… I guess we forgot what was supposed to happen .. kick ball really hard into the big net, pick it out the back of the net. Simple really. ?. That 3 points would’ve seen us into the top 5 for at least 24 hours. ??

I’m assuming a 3 match ban for Kenedy, but will next weeks game count as he’s ineligible anyway? So could be 4 games out… stupid boy.. ?

It has now been 130 PL games since #nufc have seen an opposing player sent off.

In that period, I reckon there’s been at least 20 stone wall red cards. The PGMOL has a lot to answer for.

You would think so, but the lino spoke to ref about the kennedy incident and he gave a free kick I believe so we’ll have to wait and see.
Arters foul was a red all day long too yet only got a yellow.

      (Quote)

  19. Replays show the ref was looking the wrong way so he’ll probably get a 3 game ban. Might be a good thing as his head must be all over the place. Rafa needs to remind him that Messi and Ronaldo have missed penalties.

Rafa’s still puzzling me with his team choices. How he’s managed to get a team that were very solid and playing good football into the rabble we saw yesterday I have no idea. Lejeune is a huge miss. Without him there’s no playing out from the back as Clark is hopeless with the ball. Yedlins’ threat missing down the right and Kenedy embarrassingly off form. Diame’s gone backwards too. Sounds like 5 things we learned 🙂
Cardiff won just about every tackle so it’s a good thing they have their very own donkey up front.

      (Quote)

  20. What’s the craic with the Kenedy incident again? – I know the ref didn’t give a freekick or yellow, but is there a criteria for reviewing again – it being or not being in the ref report I mean – or does it just not matter?.

      (Quote)

  21. Off topic, but what is a retractable pitch? Spurs’ new stadium has one for NFL games. Plus, they might be screwed as the budgeting was based on having NFL games there and the owner of Fulham wants Wembley and NFL there. I think Spurs have 2 seasons before this 1 billion pound stadium weighs them down and they have to sell players. Arsenal’s cost 350 million and that held them back for 10 years at least.

I want that stadium to be finished because I want to see what a retractable pitch is.

Sharpy: it is NUFC, so you just know it will be a ban. Have a look at Kimtoon’s post above as well. We never have the other teams’ players sent off.

  23. I don’t know if people can remember last season but it’s like deja vue. Having gone ok against Spurs but ultimately getting beat, we went away to Huddersfield and we were are lacklustre then too. In that game we had players missing too (Shelvey banned and didn’t Dummett get injured) – yesterday Lejuene and Yedlin missing.

The team as a whole were awful, but Manquillo is one of the worse full backs we’ve ever had. Rafa allowed Gamez and Mbemba leave in the summer – both are better RBs than Manquillo, but Rafa seems happy with him. Him having gone off at HT, I think Rafa got it wrong putting Hayden on – he’s not a defender and his head isn’t in it. It should have been Fernandez on.

Joselu was awful. I know he was isolated, but ever time the ball went into him his first touch was too heavy and he lost it more times than not. Rafa sees him as a better option than Mitrovic – I fail to see how, but that aside. Rondon or Muto should be in ahead of Joselu.

Kenedy failed to complete a single pass in the first half. He had an awful game and his kick out was born out of frustration – no excuses.
I don’t think he’s used to such a physical side and everything he tried just didn’t come off.
He shouldn’t have been on the pitch to take that penalty – not just coz of the sending off, but Rafa should have subbed him long before that. He took Ritchie off again, but it should have been Kenedy all day long. Yesterday could be good for him in the long run. I think the lad was lapping up all the Geordie love, and was coasting a little bit. Hopefully he will come back and feel he has to prove himself over again – a bit like Shelvey last season.

In a way I’m pleased the penalty was saved, because a win and 3 points may have papered over just how awful we were.

Spot on Sharpy. Rafa made some bad decisions again. Playing Joselu ahead of Rondon. Taking off Ritchie instead of Kenedy. Putting on Hayden when Clark is our fullback cover and we had an extra centre half on the bench.

Plus Leicester at home and Man U away. I am thinking we sneak a win against somebody and a lot of games will be tight except City. Yesterday was our big chance and we blew it. Not just Kenedy, but Rafa. There is a good chance we will be bottom but then ON PAPER it gets better.

Ice – I think it was a case of Kenedy having a really off day, and on the left we have no full back in Dummett who offers that overlap and delivery – so mark Kenedy and the threat down the left is gone.
I think Ritchie was aware Murphy was destroying Manquillo and had no choice but to concentrate on helping him out.
It was frustrating coz when we did get the ball into the box Perez had 2 good chances that the keeper saved – and another attempted ball into the box resulted in a penalty.

Ice – I think you mentioned the lad last week and Kim has too, but Neves at Wolves is some player isn’t he?!. Wolves were unlucky yesterday I thought, but he wouldn’t look out of place in one of the top 6 sides I reckon.

spot on, I’m actually totally over enjoying watching City now, they are seemingly unbeatable and just steam roller teams . Where is the element of competitiveness when one or two teams have all the talent.
Wish that much mentioned super league would happen, then them, Utd, Pool and Chelsea can go join the millionaires super league and our PL can get it’s competitive edge back.
Like Sham said yesterday it’s getting really boring now.

I also think he would of introduced Rondon but for the sending off . Hayden infuriated me yesterday, he made two or 3 really poor tackles prior to the sending off and he was only on for 20 bloody minutes. He almost looked like he did it on purpose , ah well, at least he’ll have a few Saturdays off with his mrs now, every cloud and all that. 🙄

Kim – I’m not sure how much longer Yedlin is out for, but whilst I agree Sterry is probably a better option than Manquillo – Chelsea, City and Arsenal would be a real baptism of fire. I would change formation –

    ————-—— Dubravka—————
    — Fernandez-Lascelles-Dummett —
    Ritchie ———————-——— Murphy
    ———————- Diame ———————-
    —- Shelvey ————-——- Ki ———-
    ———————- Muto ————————
    ————-—— Rondon ———————-

I don’t mind switching Clark with Dummett or Atsu and Murphy or Perez and Muto.

But I think Ritchie and Murphy will be chasing wing backs against Chelsea and City – Diame and Ki could move across and help them out if needed. But having the 3 of them in midfield would help close down or man mark their key playmakers. 3 CBs should then give us the cover at the back. Muto and Rondon should offer more up front than Perez and Joselu – but I think Perez works hard and can still get into good positions so I wouldn’t mind him and Rondon.
