Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle: A woeful display on so many levels

On a day where we should’ve been targeting a comfortable three points, we’ve ended up crawling over the line against a newly promoted Cardiff – in a game that has to go down as one of the most frustrating watches as a Newcastle United fan.

Quite incredibly, our 10 men could and should have won it late one, only for Kenedy to see his tame 96th minute penalty saved. How he was allowed to take it after such a dreadful display is beyond me.

We deserved nothing from that. Us taking a point will be bad enough if you’re a Cardiff fan, so the fact we very nearly took all three is quite unbelievable really.

It was an absolutely shocking first half. So many cheap free kicks and corners (which was infuriating given this would’ve clearly been identified as their best route to a goal) so little options on the ball, a lack of intensity and a total lack of quality.

Manquillo was dreadful (and was hauled off by Rafa at the break), Diame wasn’t nearly as influential as we’ve seen recently, Perez was woeful and an isolated Joselu frustrated. That being said, it’s unfair to pick out too many individuals when the collective performance was WAY below what we showed against Spurs last Saturday.

Our first half was perhaps summed up by the fact Kenedy had failed to complete a single pass in 45 minutes of action (the first Premier League player to do this since 2010)  – and he should’ve seen red after kicking out at Victor Camarasa!

It could only get better in the second half – but it got worse.

We showed no urgency, lacked intensity and our discipline was non existent – which was summed up by Isaac Hayden’s reckless challenge that saw him sent off with 25 minutes left on the clock. He may be frustrated that a move hasn’t materialised, but it was idiotic. Both he, Kenedy and Manquillo could’ve seen red.

With City, Chelsea and Arsenal up next, it’s fair to say our performance level will have to be upped considerably if we want to avoid an absolute towelling or two.

A woeful and worrying display, but at least it’s a point!

  1. Eric, yeah tagging is a big problem and I don’t see it as art at all. There have been some beautiful pieces done at this years upfest though. If I had an end house I would love the wall done by one of them. There’s one that’s an underwater coral scene and an amazing bird one that extends onto the pavement which I love.

  2. My ex hates all of it, reckons it lowers the tone, I have had many heated rows with him over it. It brings 50,000 visitors to our area and lots of income which is badly needed. We also get the very best street artist from all over the world come to paint, for me it’s a win win as I love art .

Better not take your ex to SJP with all the Sports Direct graffiti there.

I think my problem is with tagging. If someone with talent uses a wall as their canvas then I think we should accept that it is art and like it or dislike it on its merits and our own tastes. You should watch that Banksy NYC documentary. There were all of these people trying to follow him around the city and he still managed to do it incognito. He even told them it was a month of Bansky and they still couldn’t find him.

  4. He’s very good at staying out the lime light is Banksy Eric, no idea how he does it mind.
A lot of his friends in Bristol are very protective of his identity from what I can make out. He is seen as the daddy of street art who paved the way for the rest of them.

My ex would never go near SJP, he hates football full stop. He’s more golf and water sports .

  6. Stoke fans booing their players already and singing to Gary Rowett ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’
Can’t be helping but there again they keep having to turn to a 37yr old Crouch coz their forwards just aren’t doing it.

  7. If you are thinking about watching the Amazon show on Man City this sums it up perfectly. I have watched 5 of the shows now and it is a bit empty. Like City. You can see the passion of Pep but also he is like a chess master, self consumed and slightly dull in a genius sort of way. He is Keegan without the soul and Ferguson without the grit. He is still likable though and unlike anybody else you have ever seen. Like Brian Clough in the way you will think you have never met anybody else like that in your life.

    Crouchy for player-manager 🙂

Peter, what would you have been if you were not a footballer?

    Crouch: a virgin.

Gray says he’s not up here 7 days a week so doesn’t know what we expect – I dare bet he’s never actually had a conversation with a Newcastle fan to find out what we expect. He’s just drawn his own conclusion because he hears some pointing out we’ve never broke our transfer record – that must translate to the fans wanting – no expecting Ashley to spend £250m.

I’ve said plenty of times that I don’t think Ashley was the devil sent to destroy us, and I acknowledge that he has done some good things. But if Gray knew half of what had went on, he’d know it’s heavily outweighed by bad, and the bloke does not run the club in a way that it could fulfill its true potential.

I’m inclined to agree with Gray that the best we can expect is 6-10th with cup runs – but just coz we achieved that last season does not mean it will be done regularly – in fact, I would say it was a lucky one off.

  15. OK. If anybody doubts my credentials on finance I said when Trump was elected that the Dow Jones Industrial Average would be 26,000 in the summer of 2018. You can look it up on this wedsite if you doubt me.

It was not because Trumpy would be a good President but because he would juice the economy and beg, steal and borrow to make himself look good.

    August 24, 2018. DJIA 25,817.

  16. When Trumpy was elected the DJIA was 16,000. I can tell you why it is a lie and why it will go back to18,000 on the next 2 years but that would be boring.
