According to Oddschecker, former Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill is the bookies favourite to become the next Newcastle United manager – a reminder of just how grim life could be if Rafa Benitez leaves the club next summer.
Whilst no one expects Rafa to walk between now and the end of the season, we must accept the fact that he is still yet to sign a new contract – meaning he will no longer be manager of Newcastle United next summer if nothing changes.
Perhaps a timely reminder that we are lucky to have Rafa and will NOT get better than him if he goes and Ashley remains.
O’Neill – the current Republic of Ireland manager – is rated at 11/8, Brendan Rodgers and Eddie Howe are priced at 10/1, Chris Hughton is 12/1, ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic at 14/1 and Mark Warbuton, Michael Laudrup, Nigel Pearson, Patrick Viera, Steve Bruce and Tony Pulis all follow at 20/1.
I’m not saying you have to (some fans don’t want to boycott or be involved in heated protests) but this may make a few fans reconsider when they criticise sections of our fanbase trying to force change.
After all, do you really want to go down without a fight and see the Martin O’Neill’s of this world replace Rafa Benitez at Mike Ashley’s Newcastle United?
So, if Rafa was to leave NUFC the favourite to replace him is Martin O’Neill.
And fans still refuse to support the likes of @TheMagpieGroup_ in their efforts to force Ashley out and get Rafa to stay.
