Journalist claims this player is ‘top’ of Rafa’s January wanted list..This makes absolutely no sense

According to The Express, Swedish international centre-back Filip Helander is ‘at the top’ of Rafa Benitez’s January wanted list – a transfer rumour that makes absolutely no sense.

Florian Lejeune may be injured, but with Lascelles, Clark and summer signings Schar and Fernandez all on our books, another centre-back will surely be the last of Benitez’s worries.

Not only do we have FIVE capable centre-halves on our books, it’s quite clear that it’s quality offensive players that are required ahead of the winter window – with us scoring just 4 goals in our opening 7 games so far this season.

Nevertheless, The Express’ Neil Fissler claims that we’re in for Bologna’s Filip Helander – a player we’ve been linked with in the past, but surely the last player we need should Rafa be given money to spend in January.

Here’s a snippet from the story itself:

“NEWCASTLE UNITED want to land Swedish international central defender Filip Helander when the transfer window opens in January.

“Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has been impressed by reports that he has received on Helander is playing in Italy for Bologna.

“And he will be at the top of his wanted list if owner Mike Ashley releases funds to strengthen the squad in the New Year.”

It’s likely that Benitez won’t be given a great deal to spend in January, so I really don’t see a world where he spends a chunk of his budget on yet another centre-back.

So, like most stories linking us with a potential new signing, this is one we can take with a considerable pinch of salt!

  1. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s true, we are probably still playing too attacking for Rafa, needs to tighten things up ???
