Rafa Benitez has claimed that even Mike Ashley now knows that the team must be strengthened in January – with him confirming that talks having taken place with Lee Charnley for ‘a while’ leading up to the winter window.
Ashley often keeps himself away from footballing matters at NUFC, however his presence over the last two games may prove to be perfect timing as far as our January plans are concerned.
You can never second guess him, but he’ll have seen first hand just how much we’re struggling. We didn’t score in either game against Palace or Leicester and, on this form, look like a side destined for a real relegation scrap.
Here’s what Rafa said when discussing Mike Ashley’s sudden attendance over the past few weeks:
“I think he knows (that we need to invest) because obviously we have been talking with Lee Charnley for a while. I think everybody knows,”
Mike may have no interest in the club, but he will want to protect his asset. The only time he’s ever ploughed money into the club is when things have gone wrong.
If things don’t change, either a sale or some form of spending in January is essential.
