Benitez drops shock transfer hint ahead of the January window – “We are looking at other positions”

Rafa Benitez has hinted that he will NOT be looking to sign another striker in January – with him suggesting that he will instead look to sign someone who’ll give us ‘something different’ in other attacking areas.

Given our total lack of goals so far this season and the fact a proven goalscorer was not signed following Mitrovic’s sale, many felt that a new striker is essential – but Rafa’s words here suggest that a winger or number 10 may be what he looks for.

When assessing our current options up front ahead of the January transfer window, Benitez suggested that we are not light on forwards – but instead may need someones to give us ‘something different’ in ‘other positions’.

Here’s what he’s had to say when asked about his plans ahead of the winter window:

“[We are] not really [light on attacking numbers], it is injuries and the fact [Yoshinori] Muto is still trying to adapt to the Premier League, it’s not numbers.

“It’s more that we are looking at other positions, and we are looking for something different.

“We don’t have this and we don’t have this, but, if the team can compete, we can get results.”

With Rondon, Joselu and Muto three options up top, we do have a few players that can play in that central striker role – however Joselu is not the answer, Rondon is yet to prove his fitness and Muto has been deployed in more of a second striker role so far.

If Rondon can stay fit and find his feet then I don’t see us needing another striker, but any injury to him leaves us with Joselu – a striker we can not rely on to score goals.

What do you make of Rafa’s comments? Would it be a big risk to not get another striker signed in January?

  1. C’mon Rafa we DO need a striker and time is not on our side. If the non prolific rondon turns out to be another slim ani then we are in dire straights. Get those wingers back on the right track and we desperately need a decent no 10.
Oh, and a new owner wouldn’t go amiss!

  2. If Rafa’s opinion is that we don’t need someone who can score goals then he is wrong. Simply wrong.
