Callum Roberts may not be a household name amongst NUFC fans just yet, but if his current form for the U-23’s is anything to go by, it won’t be long until he’s in Rafa Benitez’s first team plans.
After a loan spell at Kilmarnock last season, the 21-year-old featured in Rafa’s pre-season plans, putting in several impressive cameos over the summer.
He’s since returned to U-23 action and has been in outstanding form, bagging 5 goals and 2 in nine starts and being nominated for the Premier League 2 player of the month for September.
To top it all off, he scored this stunning goal during the U-23’s Premier League Cup win over Notts County last week, beating three men before firing into the top corner from an angle:
This is quality from @Calroberts_ ??
He impressed me over pre-season & is tearing it up at U-23 level.
One for the future! ?#NUFC

Given the form (or lack of it) being shown from Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy so far this season, their positions in the NUFC squad could be threatened by Roberts before long.
He looked to have a burst of pace, tight dribbling and a nice low centre of gravity when I saw him over pre-season, and his goal in the clip above shows he’s technically capable too.
An exciting prospect and one to watch over the coming months!
