Report reveals why striker turned down summer move to NUFC – despite us offering more money

According to French outlet Monaco-Matin, Newcastle offered Alassane Plea a bigger wage packet than Borussia Monchengladbach over the summer – however he rejected a move to Tyneside as he wasn’t impressed by the club’s ‘sporting project’.

Plea ended up making a big money move to Germany over the summer, but we were credited with strong interest in the striker – with Sky Sports reporting that we’d made a £20m bid for the striker in July.

Reports from France are now suggesting why interest from Newcastle was rebuffed by the Frenchman, claiming that he was no impressed by our ‘sporting project’ – even though we were offering better money than the Bundesliga side.

The recent release of the Fans Forum minutes state that Salomon Rondon was Rafa’s ‘number one’ striker target over the summer, however the fact Plea is currently the second top scorer in Germany may leave a bitter taste in Benitez’s mouth.

He’s played eight times for Monchengladbach and scored eight goals – getting on the scoresheet in their incredible 3-0 win away to Bayern Munich over the weekend.

Another one from France we may live to regret missing out on – although it seems he was never keen to make the move.
